A distant planet, a vague corporate mission, and a faceless employer expecting results. That is the setup behind Satisfactory by Coffee Stain Studios, launched on March 19th, 2019. Despite carrying the early access label, it has gathered glowing reviews, picked up award nominations, and convinced a lot of players that $29.99 USD is a reasonable price for a planet's worth of conveyor belts.

What the Game Is About

Satisfactory is a first person factory simulator. You play an engineer dispatched to an unfamiliar world to complete a project for FICSIT Incorporated. The details of that project remain conveniently classified, which is corporate speak for do not ask questions. Your job is to land, scavenge your drop pod, build a hub, and start turning raw alien terrain into a fully automated industrial complex.

You can play solo as the lonely pioneer or invite friends along. Either way, the loop is the same: explore, gather, build, automate, expand, repeat. The long term ambition is straightforward. Eventually the factory should run itself while you unlock more advanced technology and tackle ever more elaborate production chains.

Core Features Worth Knowing

A 30 km² Open World in First Person

The game drops you, literally, onto a planet called Massage-2(AB)b. Several starting biomes are available, each with different resource layouts and tradeoffs. The map is roughly 30 square kilometers of handcrafted terrain, with multiple biomes that reward exploration rather than procedural noise.

Build Anything, Anywhere

The heart of the experience is construction. You decide how the planet gets industrialized. Spaghetti tower in the sky, neat outposts linked by railway, sprawling mega-factory that looks like a small city: all valid choices. The game rarely tells you what to do, only what your employer wants delivered next.

Exploration and Survey

The biomes hide unique resources, oddities, and the occasional creature that does not appreciate being mined around. Combat is in first person and, while the developers stress it is not the main pillar of the game, it is not an afterthought either. Vehicles, jetpacks, and assorted safety gear exist precisely so you do not have to walk halfway across the continent every time you need quartz.

Milestones and Tiers

FICSIT keeps you focused with a progression system based on milestones and tiers. Hitting these objectives unlocks new buildings, materials, and machines, gradually pushing you from basic miners to complex multi stage production lines. Without spoiling specifics, completing the milestone tree is what gives the late game its scale.

Multiplayer

Co-op support lets friends drop into your session, with one caveat. In a standard setup, the host has to be online for anyone else to play. This is the main reason most groups end up renting a Satisfactory server, which stays available around the clock. Officially the game caps co-op at four players, though server configuration can extend that limit. Satisfactory server hosting is available through HolyHosting and other providers.

Early Access Status

Satisfactory launched on the Epic Games Store on March 19th, 2019, and reached Steam on June 8th, 2020. Coffee Stain Studios has kept up a steady release cadence, with a full launch targeted around 2022. The state of the game today is unusual for early access: most reviewers describe it as already feeling polished and complete. The Steam Awards nomination for Best Relaxing Game is a fair indicator of how it lands with players.

The most enjoyable approach is to slow down, plan a little, and treat each factory as a personal project. Whether the result is a humble three building outpost or a sky filling industrial cathedral, it is worth being a bit proud of.
