Palworld Beginner Guide: Movement, Capturing, Elements, Bases, and Work Roles

Palworld may look familiar if you have played creature-collecting games before, but it mixes that formula with survival crafting, base automation, guns, mounts, and a suspiciously large amount of unpaid Pal labor. If you are starting fresh, a few systems are worth understanding early so the opening hours feel less chaotic.

This Palworld beginner guide focuses on the mechanics that matter most at the start: movement, capturing Pals, elements, Same Type Attack Bonus, base building, and Work Suitability.

What New Players Should Know First

This guide does not spend much time on basic crafting or standard combat. Crafting works much like other survival games: gather resources, unlock recipes, and turn materials into tools, structures, gear, and supplies.

Combat also follows a familiar action-adventure rhythm. You damage enemies until they are defeated, then collect the rewards they drop. Palworld's main twist is that your Pals fight beside you, and yes, players can eventually use guns. The tone of the game is not subtle.

The systems below are the ones that usually create the most early questions.

Movement Options

Walking, sprinting, and jumping are only the basics. Palworld also lets players glide, slide, climb, and ride certain Pals as mounts.

Gliding

To glide, craft the Normal Parachute. It unlocks at Technology Tier 5 and can be made at a Workbench with:

  • 10x Wood
  • 2x Cloth

After equipping it, jump into the air and press the Jump button again, which is Space by default, to deploy the glider. Keep an eye on stamina, since it drains while gliding.

Sliding

Sliding does not require a crafted item. Sprint with Left Shift by default, then press the crouch button, which is C by default. If timed correctly, your character drops into a slide.

A useful early movement trick is to slide down a slope, jump near the end, then open your glider. This can carry you farther than a normal jump and glide.

Climbing

To climb, move against a vertical surface and press Jump while hugging the wall. Your character should grab on, then you can move upward or sideways. Stamina still matters, so do not start a heroic cliff climb with an empty bar.

Riding Mounts

Some Pals can be ridden, but you need the correct saddle first. Unlock the saddle from the Technology Tree, then craft it at the Pal Gear Workbench.

For example, the Rushoar Saddle unlocks at Level 6. It requires:

  • 3x Leather
  • 10x Stone
  • 5x Paldium Fragment

After crafting the saddle, summon the Pal and activate its Partner Skill. The Pal will move close enough for you to mount it.

Capturing Pals

Capturing Pals starts with Pal Spheres. Each basic Pal Sphere costs:

  • 1x Paldium Fragment
  • 3x Wood
  • 3x Stone

Once you find a wild Pal you want, weaken it until its health is low. Then hold the Pal Sphere button, Q by default, aim at the Pal, and release to throw.

Capture chances are not always 100%. If the Pal breaks out, you may need to throw more spheres. Lower health generally helps, but do not overdo the damage unless the plan is to collect loot instead of a new worker.

Elements and Matchups

Every Pal has an icon near its name showing its element. Palworld includes nine elements:

  • Electric
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Ground
  • Grass
  • Ice
  • Dragon
  • Dark
  • Neutral

Most elements are strong against another type. When a Pal is hit by an element it is weak to, it takes more damage than normal.

The main advantage chart is:

  • Water > Fire
  • Fire > Grass
  • Grass > Ground
  • Ground > Electric
  • Electric > Water
  • Fire > Ice
  • Ice > Dragon
  • Dragon > Dark
  • Dark > Neutral

The reverse interaction usually reduces damage. For example, a Fire-type Pal takes less damage from Fire attacks than a Pal weak to Fire would.

Neutral is the exception. It does not have the same circular matchup behavior as the other types, but it is weak to Dark based on the chart above.

Same Type Attack Bonus

Same Type Attack Bonus, often shortened to STAB, rewards a Pal for using attacks that match its own element. A Water-type Pal using a Water attack will usually deal more than that move's listed base damage, except when the target's typing resists it.

For example, Fuack is a Water-type Pal. If it uses Aqua Gun, which has a base power of 40, it can deal extra damage because the move matches Fuack's element. Electric Pals are the main concern because Electric has the advantage over Water.

Pals learn new attacks as they level. You can also teach some moves with Skill Fruits, which lets you shape a Pal's moveset around coverage, STAB, or a specific team role.

Base Building Basics

Your first base begins with the Palbox. It is part of the tutorial, so missing it is unlikely unless you are speedrunning confusion.

A Palbox requires:

  • 1x Paldium Fragment
  • 8x Wood
  • 3x Stone

Place the Palbox in a location with enough room to build, preferably near useful resources and on fairly flat ground. After that, you can build structures such as Pal Beds, Campfires, workstations, storage, and other base items.

Building is limited to the Palbox radius. Anything outside that range is off-limits for base construction. Early on, players can only build one Palbox, but additional Palboxes become available as the base progresses.

Work Suitability Explained

Open a Pal's stats and you will see Work Suitability on the right side. These icons show which jobs that Pal can perform at a base. Higher levels generally mean better performance in that role.

Here are the Work Suitability types and what they do:

  • Kindling: Provides fire for cooking and production through campfires, ovens, and cooking pots.
  • Planting: Plants seeds in crop plots.
  • Handiwork: Crafts items at stations and helps construct buildings.
  • Lumbering: Cuts trees to gather Wood.
  • Medicine Production: Creates medicine at the Medicine Workbench.
  • Transporting: Carries items around the base and places them in containers.
  • Watering: Waters crops in plantations.
  • Generating Electricity: Powers a base through the Power Generator.
  • Gathering: Collects crops from plantations.
  • Mining: Extracts Stone, Ore, and similar materials.
  • Cooling: Keeps food cold in refrigeration devices.
  • Farming: Produces specific drops when assigned to the Ranch.

Understanding Work Suitability is one of the biggest early upgrades to your base. A Pal with the right job skill can turn a messy camp into a production line, which is much better than personally carrying every rock like a determined goblin.
