How to Handle Ghosts in Don't Starve Together

Don't Starve Together·March 5, 2024·8 min read

Ghosts are usually best avoided in the Constant, but sometimes a floating problem insists on becoming your problem. When that happens, it helps to know what Ghosts can do and which methods actually work against them.

Dealing With Ghosts in Don't Starve Together

Ghosts are aggressive mobs that only appear after digging up a Grave. They spawn roughly 10% of the time, so most grave-robbing trips are quiet. When a Ghost does appear, it can damage anything nearby that has a Health bar.

A hostile Ghost cannot be revived with a Telltale Heart. That item is for bringing fallen players back, not for giving an angry spirit a second career. Trying to use one on a Ghost only triggers a character-specific quote. Wortox says, "There's no body for it to return to." Willow says, "I'm not wasting this on them!" Sensible.

The simplest solution is to avoid digging up Graves, but that also means skipping resources such as Trinkets, Gears, and Nightmare Fuel. If you do disturb one, use one of the methods below.

Method 1: Kill the Ghost

Ghosts have 200 Health, and some weapons handle them much better than others. From strongest to weakest, useful options include:

  • Gunpowder or Old Bell
  • Blow Dart
  • Dark Sword
  • Tentacle Spike, Battle Spear, Thulecite Club, Tooth Trap, or Slurtle Slime
  • Morning Star
  • Ham Bat
  • Bat Bat
  • Spear
  • PickSlashAxe
  • Axe, Pickaxe, Luxury Axe, Opulent Axe, or Boomerang
  • Shovel, Pitchfork, Hammer, Torch, Umbrella, Walking Cane, or Willow's Lighter
  • Lucy the Axe
  • Fishing Rod or Bug Net

Ghosts are immune to Fire damage, so Fire Staff and Fire Dart attacks do not help.

Method 2: Lure the Ghost

Fighting a Ghost directly can cost time, durability, and Health. Since Ghosts do not drop loot, that trade is not always worth it.

Instead, lead the Ghost toward Beefalo, Pigs, or other hostile mobs. The Ghost may attack them, and those mobs can deal with the spirit for you. Ghosts also disappear after some time, so you can let the chaos resolve itself and collect any loot left by the other enemies.

Method 3: Trap the Ghost

Ghosts float, but they are still vulnerable to Tooth Traps. Craft one with 1x Log, 1x Rope, and 1x Hound's Tooth. This is a useful fallback when there are no Pigs, Beefalo, or convenient enemies nearby.

If your group plans to dig up every grave in sight, a Don't Starve Together server through HolyHosting gives everyone a shared world for exploration, mistakes, and the occasional spectral consequence.
