Enshrouded·March 27, 2024·26 min read

Enshrouded's Hollow Halls update, also known as Update #1 Version 0.7.1.0, added the game's first major post-launch content wave. It brought new dungeon areas, enemies, quests, weapons, NPC content, music, building pieces, and a large list of quality and technical improvements.

Hollow Halls Update Overview

Hollow Halls expands each biome with a new playable area carrying enemies and challenges suited to that biome's level. These dungeons add tougher encounters, new rewards, and another reason to prepare before wandering into the dark with misplaced confidence.

What's New in Hollow Halls

  • Each biome now has a new Hollow Halls area with level-appropriate enemies and challenges.
  • New quests guide players into the added content. Speak with the Alchemist to begin.
  • New enemies appear in the depths.
  • A new survivor can be found inside the Hollow Halls.
  • A new crafting station and new recipes can be unlocked.
  • New weapons, building blocks, furniture, decorative props, and other rewards were added.
  • The 60hz issue was fixed, improving smoothness at higher frame rates.
  • Emily the Farmer now offers potted plants for players who want more color around the base. A kiln is required to craft the pots.
  • Cade the Carpenter now offers round doors and windows.
  • The seedbed workstation can now grow additional tree seedlings, and many trees gained new growth stages.
  • Player characters can sit on furniture, including chairs, benches, thrones, and toilets.
  • Willow Crush in the Revelwoods was fully reworked, with other areas improved as well.

For the developer's full breakdown, see the official Hollow Halls update notes on Steam.

Quality of Life

  • Stack splitting in backpacks and chests was improved, allowing freely selected stack sizes.
  • Magical chest contents can now be used in crafting stations.
  • The loot menu was reworked for quicker collection.
  • Items can now be crafted in stacks.
  • Sending items to other players now has a more convenient menu and warns when the receiver's backpack is full.
  • A world map ping function lets players mark areas for others in multiplayer.
  • Servers can now be searched and favorited by IP in the server browser.
  • Jumping and gliding can now be mapped separately. Gliding remains on the jump input by default, but players can choose another key or button.

Technical Improvements and Stability

Steam updating was reworked so future updates can patch only affected areas rather than the full 30 GB game data. This update required a complete download once, but later updates should be faster.

Save data stability also improved. The game now creates periodic automatic backups, and if a save becomes unreadable, a previous version can be loaded.

Rendering and Performance

  • General performance was improved, with stability remaining a priority.
  • Nvidia Reflex support was added and can be toggled in graphics settings when supported by the hardware.
  • A sharpness setting was added to graphics options.
  • A contact shadows toggle was added.
  • Optional micro spiders can be switched off. The larger spiders remain, because apparently Embervale has standards.

Gameplay Changes

  • More shields were added to progression.
  • Multishot no longer consumes multiple arrows when special arrows are selected.
  • Leech stats, such as on the Ring of Endless Life, now have a chance to convert a percentage of enemy damage into player healing.

  • Breach no longer triggers with arrows.
  • Water Aura no longer damages healed players who have Counterstrike.
  • Shell Shock now works as described.
  • Warden and Tower Aura no longer trigger while downed.
  • Merciless Attack can trigger faster after overpowering enemies.
  • Weapon durability was tuned, with melee weapons losing durability slightly slower, wands slightly faster, and rarer items improved.
  • Ledge grabbing at intended jump height is more forgiving.
  • Ammunition cycling issues with Q or LT were fixed.
  • Action bar and ammo selection no longer skip slots at higher frame rates.
  • Eternal spells are no longer consumed when throwing explosive powder balls at the same time.
  • Some skill and enemy sounds no longer play for the entire party regardless of distance.

  • Enemy and wildlife pathfinding and steering were improved.
  • Player camera behavior around enemies was improved.
  • Enemy jumping was improved.

Crafting, Building, and Terraforming

  • Player base border visualization now works better with combined Flame Altar areas and intersecting no-build zones.
  • Transparent terrain voxel issues near the upper build limit were fixed.
  • Some fireplaces were updated so they properly support cooking or warmth for the resting buff.
  • Another plant growth save issue was fixed.
  • A Spinning Wheel quest was added to make the workstation easier to notice.
  • Emily can now craft flower soil, which grows flowers faster than regular soil.
  • Several double doors were realigned to better fit the voxel grid.
  • Rare building shapes that could not be dismantled as a whole were fixed.
  • Building in margins of no-build and no-save zones was fixed.
  • Hard wood is now used in more recipes.
  • Dismantling objects through walls while interfering with seedling placement was fixed.

Additional UI Fixes

  • World map location icons that vanished in some saves now recover after saving and reloading once.
  • Drop-down menus no longer leave the screen as easily when opened near the edge.
  • Several error messages were improved for clarity.
  • Older AMD graphics cards no longer trigger the graphics driver update warning.
  • Staff spell charging progress was restored.
  • Very long multiplayer passwords were fixed.
  • Items now lose the New marker more reliably after selection.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a launch issue on AMD graphics cards.
  • Fixed a rare crash affecting large player bases.
  • Reverted an increased Shroud area to protect existing player bases.
  • Fixed a building hammer tab-out issue that opened the build menu and left it open.
  • Fixed camera clipping when fighting large enemies up close.
  • Fixed remaining cases of awkward camera behavior during close-range combat.
  • Fixed several smaller stability problems connected to large bases and building interactions.

Overall, Hollow Halls is both a content update and a cleanup pass. The new dungeons and survivor content are the obvious additions, but the crafting, server browser, map ping, magical chest, and performance changes also make day-to-day play less fussy.
