How to Add a Password to Your Enshrouded Server

Uninvited players can join an Enshrouded server through the public server list or by direct connection if they have the address. That can lead to griefing, disrupted progress, or general multiplayer chaos. A server password is the simplest way to keep the world limited to the people you actually invited.

Add an Enshrouded Server Password

You can change the password from your server files. The setting can also be updated again later if the password is shared too widely.

1. Open the HolyHosting server panel and open the FTP file manager.

1. Log in, then find `enshrouded_server.json` and choose Edit.

1. Locate the `userGroups` section. Update the password value in the format `"password": "your-password"`. Keep the quotation marks in place, since JSON is picky and enjoys ruining a good afternoon over punctuation.

1. Save the file, then restart the server so the new password takes effect.

Extra User Groups

Enshrouded can use multiple `userGroups` if you want separate passwords or permissions for different sets of players. In that case, add each group inside the existing `userGroups` configuration and give each one its own password and permission values. Be careful with commas, brackets, and quotation marks when editing the JSON file.

Why Use a Password

A password is the main way to make an Enshrouded server private. Without one, anyone who finds the server through the in-game list or connects with the server address may be able to join. That is fine for public communities, but not ideal for a private world with friends or family.

If the password is leaked, repeat the steps above, replace it with a new one, save the file, and restart the server.

Joining a Password-Protected Server

Joining works almost the same as joining any other Enshrouded server. In the server list, a lock icon appears beside servers that require a password. Select the server, enter the password when prompted, then connect.

If the lock icon does not appear after adding the password, confirm that the file was saved correctly and that the server was restarted.
