Don't Starve Together NPC Guide: Locations, Trades, and Rewards

Don't Starve Together·May 7, 2024·25 min read

The Constant is full of monsters, but not every important character is trying to chew on you. Don't Starve Together also includes NPCs who offer trades, quests, rewards, unlocks, or trouble with better presentation.

Interactive NPCs in Don't Starve Together

This guide focuses on NPCs players can interact with through trades, quests, unlocks, or special events. It does not cover bosses, hostile creatures, neutral animals, or passive animals.

Maxwell

Before he becomes playable, Maxwell appears as an NPC in Adventure and Sandbox Modes. In Adventure Mode's Epilogue Chapter, players can attack Maxwell or save him from his fate.

Saving him requires placing the Divining Rod into the Nightmare Lock. Doing so unlocks Maxwell as a playable character.

Pig King

The Pig King rules Pig Villages and usually spawns in the Deciduous Forest biome. He cannot be attacked and is immune to all damage.

During the day, players can give him items in exchange for Gold Nuggets. Common trade items include Trinkets and food items, with the number of Gold Nuggets depending on what he receives.

During Hallowed Nights, the Pig King also gives Halloween Candy with Gold Nuggets. Giving him the Golden Belt starts the Pig King Wrestling Match. Winning rewards Lucky Golden Nuggets.

King of the Merms

The King of the Merms is available only when playing as Wurt. He appears after a Merm is fed on the Royal Tapestry, which requires 20x Kelps, 10x Pig Skins, and 15x Beefalo Wools to craft.

Players can attack him, but once his Health falls below 75%, he summons 4x Loyal Merm Guards. Wurt can also feed him the same food she eats, but she must wear the Clever Disguise. Other characters cannot feed him.

The King must be fed regularly. If his Hunger reaches 0, he loses Health over time. While he is alive, all Merms gain stat boosts.

Players can trade fish to him for Gold Nuggets and extra presents, including:

  • Kelp Fronds
  • Seeds
  • Cut Reeds
  • Tentacle Spots
  • Desiccated Tentacle
  • Melty Marbles
  • Air Unfreshener
  • Bent Spork
  • Hardened Rubber Bung
  • Brittle Seed Pods
  • Swirly Seeds
  • Sharp Seeds
  • Pointy Seeds
  • Seed Pods
  • Lumpy Seeds

Queen of the Moon Quay

The Queen of the Moon Quay was introduced in The Curse of Moon Quay update. She sleeps unless survivors are nearby or she receives a Banana.

Giving her a Banana makes her drop one random Rare Blueprint. Possible rewards include Cannonball, Cannon Kit, Dock Kit, Dock Piling Kit, and Moon Quay Beach Turf.

Corvus Goodfeather

Corvus Goodfeather appears only during the Midsummer Cawnival seasonal event. He arrives after the player places the Cawnival Tree.

Once present, Corvus unlocks the Cawnival Creation Filter, which includes:

  • Cawnival Sapling
  • Prize Booth Kit
  • Cawnival Token
  • Cawnival Tokens
  • Eggs in a Basket Kit
  • Hubbub for Grub Kit
  • Egg Scramble Kit
  • Nest Defender Kit
  • Cuckoo Spinwheel Kit
  • Birdhouse Ball Drop Kit

Crabby Hermit

The Crabby Hermit, also called Pearl, is exclusive to Don't Starve Together. Befriending her is required to obtain Pearl's Pearl, an essential item for summoning the Celestial Champion.

Pearl is found at her Hermit Home at night. During the day, she can appear around different parts of her island.

Friendship increases by completing tasks, such as upgrading her home or removing Underwater Salvageables. Gifts like certain fish or umbrella items can also help. Each completed task rewards a Bundle of Thanks, which gives three random Shell Bells when opened.

Higher friendship improves Bundle of Thanks rewards. At Levels 2, 4, 5, and 7, opening one can also provide a random Lure.

Pearl also trades items for Empty Bottles, with more options unlocking as friendship rises:

  • Level 1 friendship: Shell Bell Bundle, Pinchin' Winch Blueprint, and Shell Beach Turf Blueprint
  • Level 3 friendship: Jet Quill Float, Crimson Quill Float, Azure Quill Float, Saffron Quill Float, and Tackle Box
  • Level 6 friendship: Rainy Day Lure, Snow Day Lure, Stupefying Lure, and Heavy Weighted Lure
  • Level 8 friendship: Down Quill Float and Fish Food
  • Level 9 friendship: Spectackler Box

Wagstaff

Wagstaff, originally playable in Don't Starve, returns in Don't Starve Together as an NPC called the Grainy Transmission. He first appears when players enter a moonstorm. Approaching him grants the Astroggles and Incomplete Experiment blueprints.

Crafting and wearing Astroggles allows players to locate Wagstaff inside a moonstorm. He periodically asks for one of five tools. Only Winona can read the tool names clearly, while other characters see gibberish.

After receiving the requested tools, Wagstaff appears with a machine. Players must defend the machine from incoming enemies. Success causes Wagstaff to leave behind a Restrained Static before disappearing.

After the Celestial Champion is defeated, Wagstaff can appear with the Lunar Essence Extractor for two minutes. Showing him the Enlightened Shard causes Rifts to spawn. Those portals can summon special bosses when the correct conditions are met.

Defeating three of those special bosses rewards players with Spark Arks from Wagstaff. Spark Arks are used for items such as the Howitzer and Polar Bearger Bin.

Charlie

Charlie was Maxwell's assistant and is also the main antagonist of Don't Starve Together. Known as the Darkness or the Night Monster, she appears only when a player is surrounded by complete darkness.

A loud "woosh" warns that Charlie is nearby. Characters react to the sound before she attacks, dealing 100 Health damage and 20 Sanity damage. The attacks continue until the player dies or reaches a light source.

Curio Collector

The Curio Collector is a mysterious NPC who runs the Trade Inn. Interacting with him gives access to the Trade Inn's mini games. Winning those games usually rewards Profile Icons.

A persistent Don't Starve Together world through HolyHosting gives groups more time to track down NPCs, finish quests, and trade without rebuilding the same setup every session.
