Don't Starve Together Crossplay Explained by Platform

Don't Starve Together·February 29, 2024·6 min read

Don't Starve Together is built around co-op survival, so it is reasonable to ask whether friends on different platforms can share the same miserable little campfire. The answer is yes, but only in a limited way.

How Crossplay Works in Don't Starve Together

Don't Starve Together supports crossplay, but not across every version of the game. The game is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, macOS, Linux, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, yet online play is generally restricted to platforms in the same or closely related environment.

That means Nintendo Switch players cannot join friends playing the PlayStation version. PC, macOS, and Linux players can play together on the same server, which is the cleanest cross-platform setup the game offers.

Xbox and PC can also work together, but there is a catch. PC players need to launch the game through the Xbox app if they want to connect with Xbox console players. The community has discussed this setup in detail in this Xbox and PC cross-platform thread.

Will Full Crossplay Be Added?

At the time of writing, Klei Entertainment has not announced expanded crossplay for Don't Starve Together. Players still ask for it, naturally, because coordinating platforms can be harder than surviving winter with three berries and optimism.

Klei has acknowledged the broader topic through its Shared Unlocks FAQ, but full crossplay is not listed as a current priority.

Does Don't Starve Together Have Cross-Save?

Progress does not transfer between separate in-game accounts across the different versions of Don't Starve Together. However, players can share unlocks and items across platforms to reduce some of the grind.

To do that, players need to merge accounts through Klei's account merge instructions.

Can You Play Split Screen?

Yes, some versions support local co-op through split screen. Klei explains that Nintendo Switch players can use split-screen co-op online, offline, or over LAN in its split-screen support article.

Online split screen also gives access to unlock and item-sharing benefits. If you would rather host a steady world for online friends, a dedicated Don't Starve Together server through HolyHosting can keep the world available without relying on one player's local session.
