Don't Starve Together has a large cast, and each survivor changes how you handle hunger, combat, sanity, resource gathering, and teamwork. Some characters are friendly to beginners, while others ask you to manage unusual mechanics before The Constant finishes the job.

This guide covers each character's birthday, perks, quirks, stats, favorite food, unlock method, and core playstyle notes. Use it as a quick reference before choosing who to bring into a run.

Wes is a pantomime character built around challenge and roleplay. His inability to speak can make interactions with NPCs and other players more amusing, but mechanically, he is fragile and weak compared with most of the roster.
His balloon skills can distract enemies, which gives him some team utility. Even so, Wes is best for players who want a tougher run or a support role that depends on teamwork.

Maxwell was once the King of the Nightmare Throne and the main antagonist of the original Don't Starve. As a playable character, he uses shadow manipulation to create Shadow Puppets that can chop trees, gather resources, and even dig up graves for loot.
He also restores Sanity steadily over time, making him less prone to panic than many characters. The tradeoff is his extremely low starting health and defense, so poor positioning can end a Maxwell run quickly.

Wilson is the balanced scientist of Don't Starve Together. His main feature is his beard, which provides insulation against Freezing and can be shaved to recover some Sanity.
Because his stats are balanced and his mechanics are simple, Wilson is a strong starter choice. He does not have many standout tricks beyond the beard, but that simplicity is exactly why he works well for learning the game.

Wortox is a mischievous imp with a high-risk, high-reward playstyle. He generates Souls and can use them to restore Health, Hunger, or Sanity, giving him unusual flexibility.
Regular food is much less effective for him because all positive and negative effects from eating normal food are halved. That means Wortox players need to understand Soul management instead of relying on the usual pantry plan.

Wurt is a young Merm who wants to restore glory to Merm-kind. She works especially well around swamps and Merms, and her playstyle lets players befriend Merms and use their abilities.
She cannot drown in the ocean. Instead, she only receives 50% wetness while crossing deep water, keeps her inventory, and avoids the usual wetness penalties. The drawbacks are strict: she hates pigs, pigs hate her, she cannot trade with the Pig King, and she cannot eat meat, dairy, or eggs. Holding fish also drains 4.4 Sanity per minute.

Woodie begins with Lucy the Axe, which lets him chop trees faster than other survivors. He can also transform into three were-forms: Werebeaver, Weremoose, and Weregoose. Staying transformed drains 6 Sanity per minute.
His forms have different uses:

Willow loves fire, which is helpful and concerning in equal measure. She is immune to fire damage, can recover Sanity around flames, cooks well, and can burn through certain obstacles.
Cold is her main weakness. Willow is more vulnerable to Freezing, and insulation items are less effective for her than they are for other characters.

Wanda does not use a normal health bar. Instead, she manages age. Time passes, damage adds years, and her tools let her control that aging process.
Her mechanics include effects such as teleporting a short distance by winding down years and using Shadow Weapons that gain damage based on her current age. She is unusual, but experienced players can get strong value from her time-focused kit.

WX-78 is a mechanical survivor from an unknown civilization. It uses circuits and electrical charge to unlock abilities, such as increased maximum Sanity or health regeneration over time.
WX does not suffer from food pickiness and can take advantage of spoiled food in ways most characters cannot. Water is the major problem. Rain, wet ground, and other damp conditions damage WX, so shelter matters as soon as the weather turns.

Webber looks like a mix between a young boy and a shadowy spider. His monster nature lets him befriend spiders and turn them into allies, and he can use monster meat for sustenance.
The downside is social. Neutral mobs become hostile near Webber, and his lower maximum Sanity requires careful management.

Warly was a chef before The Constant, and his kit reflects that. He uses custom portable cookware, which makes him excellent for cooking support in a group.
He will eat cooked food, but not raw food, and he gets hungry faster than many characters. His food preferences make him powerful with planning and annoying without it.

Wolfgang is one of the strongest characters in the game. His high stats help him survive, and his damage output can become excellent when he maintains his Might Meter.
That meter falls over time and must be restored through exercise. If Wolfgang becomes Wimpy, he deals less damage and suffers faster Sanity drain, making meter management essential.

Wendy can summon her twin sister Abigail to help fight mobs. She also avoids Sanity loss near ghosts, which fits her haunted playstyle.
On her own, Wendy is weak in combat because of her reduced damage. Abigail offsets that weakness, but Wendy loses Sanity when Abigail's health reaches 0.

Wickerbottom is an insomniac librarian who supports a base through Magic Books crafted with Papyrus and other materials. These books can improve resource production and provide combat utility.
For example, Overcoming Arachnophobia can slow mobs for 2 minutes. Her downsides are insomnia, which weakens benefits from Tents and Bed Rolls, and a delicate stomach that causes extra Sanity loss from spoiled food.

Wigfrid is an actress whose battle-ready roles became her playstyle. In combat, she regains Health and Sanity when attacking mobs.
She also has an Inspiration Meter that powers Battle Songs, granting effects such as reduced weapon durability loss or reduced Sanity drain. Her limitation is diet: she only eats meat, so make sure the camp has a steady supply.

Winona is a former Voxola Radio Company worker who values hard work. Her Trusty Tape can repair damaged clothes or patch boat leaks, making her useful for maintenance.
She can also build unique gadgets, including a catapult, spotlight, and generator. Her work ethic has a cost: she loses Hunger faster, and her crafting speed suffers when Hunger drops below 50.

Walter is a scout who does not lose Sanity from many situations that bother others, including darkness and nearby monsters. However, taking damage causes Sanity loss, and he keeps losing Sanity while his health is not full.
He can craft a portable Camper's Tent, combining Tent-like benefits with Fur Roll portability. He also has Woby, a loyal companion he can ride for faster movement, though Walter cannot attack while mounted.

Wormwood is a living tangle of vines animated by lunar magic. Plant-like enemies will not attack him when he is nearby, and he can connect with plants in ways other characters cannot.
He loses Sanity when nearby plants are destroyed, but he brings excellent farming utility. At a base or camp, Wormwood can plant seeds without a Farm, saving resources for other needs.

Wonkey is not a normal character choice. It is a state other characters can transform into after meeting the requirement.
As Wonkey, players gain faster combat and movement speed and permanent access to Moon Quay Island. The drawbacks are serious: previously docile mobs such as Pigs and Bunnymen become hostile, and the player can no longer understand certain mobs, including the Crabby Hermit and Ancient Fuelweaver.
If you are planning a shared Don't Starve Together world on HolyHosting, matching character strengths can make the difference between a stable camp and a very educational disaster.
