7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die Skill Tree Breakdown: Attributes, Perks, and Books Explained

7 Days to Die·May 20, 2025·65 min read

Surviving the apocalypse in 7 Days to Die is about more than crafting nails and stacking concrete blocks. The hordes scale up fast, and if your character build is built on vibes, you will get folded by a single radiated cop. The skill tree is the engine that turns a panicked looter into a calm operator who can clear a tier 6 quest before dinner. Below is a full breakdown of how Skill Points work, what every Attribute does, every Perk you can buy with those points, and the Perk Books that round out the build.

Pair this with a HolyHosting dedicated server and your group can grind builds together without losing progress to a flaky host.

How Skill Points Work

XP is generated by almost everything you do. Zombie kills, crafting recipes, harvesting trees, mining ore, even hammering away on base upgrades all feed your XP bar. Every level grants one Skill Point, and the player cap sits at level 300, so over the life of a save you will accumulate plenty of currency to play with. Quests can also drop bonus Skill Points on completion, which is the fastest way to push a new character forward in the early game.

Skill Points feed into one of five Attributes. Each one buffs a different weapon family with bonus headshot damage and a higher chance to dismember on hit:

  • Perception: rifles, spears, and explosives.
  • Strength: shotguns, clubs, and sledgehammers.
  • Fortitude: fists and machine guns.
  • Agility: bows, handguns, and knives.
  • Intellect: stun batons and robotic turrets.

The more points you sink into a given Attribute, the stronger that branch becomes. Nothing is locked behind class choices, so you can spread your points across multiple Attributes or hard-commit to one playstyle. Most builds end up specializing in two complementary Attributes rather than going wide.

Unlocking Perks

Once an Attribute reaches a certain level, the Perks underneath it open up for purchase. Perks are upgradable through several ranks, and most of them have an Attribute requirement that gates the higher tiers. Each Attribute branches into three flavors of Perks. Perception, for instance, splits its Perks across combat, general utility, and scavenging, while Strength leans into combat, general utility, and construction. Here is what is inside each branch.

Perception Perks

Perk Books and Why They Matter

Skill Points are not the only path to power. Perk Books are scattered across the world inside mailboxes, bookshelves, trader inventories, and quest rewards. Reading one grants a permanent bonus that does not require any Skill Point investment. The bonuses on books are distinct from the Perks unlocked through Attributes, so they stack on top of an existing build rather than competing with it.

Building Smart

The trick with the skill tree is to commit early. Pick one primary weapon, one secondary weapon, and one utility focus, then stack Attribute points and matching Perk Books into those lanes for the first 50 levels. Spreading too thin leaves you with a character that does nothing well, which is unfortunate when the screamer brings half the wasteland to your front door. From level 50 onward you can branch out, top up survival Perks, and unlock the heavy Full Set bonuses that turn a survivor into a problem.

With a HolyHosting server hosting your group, all of that grind translates into permanent progress your friends can pick up the moment they log in.
