How to Resolve the Origin Ray Fail Error in 7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die·August 30, 2023·9 min read

Survival games and weird bugs go together like zombies and broken physics. 7 Days to Die, still in early access, has collected its share of cryptic crash messages, and the Origin Ray Fail error is one of the more annoying entries on that list. It usually appears out of nowhere and frequently drags the whole client down with it, forcing a restart.

This guide covers why the error shows up and walks through two fixes that have worked for most players.

What Triggers the Origin Ray Fail Error

The error shows up most often in Alpha 21 builds, and the root cause is almost always an in-game object that the engine can no longer track correctly. The classic example is an active drone that has drifted outside your character's render distance while the game still treats it as live.

Other reported culprits include:

  • Broken idle animations on world objects, such as tree sway or fire particles
  • A character that fails to keep up with the speed of the vehicle being ridden
  • Sudden FPS drops on low-spec hardware that cannot render objects in time
  • Mods installed in the wrong order or with missing dependencies
  • Manual edits to game files that left something in an inconsistent state

Once you have a rough idea of which scenario applies, pick the matching fix below.

Fix 1: Wipe the Drone Save Data

If a misplaced drone is the suspect, the cleanest path is to delete its save data and bring the unit back through Creative Mode.

  1. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type `%appdata%` and click OK.
  3. Open the 7 Days to Die folder, then go into saves.
  4. Open the folder for your specific world.
  5. Delete `drones.dat` and `drones.dat.bak`.
  6. Launch the game and press F1 to open the console.
  7. Type `cm` and press Enter.
  8. Press U to enter Creative Mode.
  9. Spawn a new drone, along with anything else you lost from the wipe.
  10. Optionally, press F1 again and type `cm` to leave Creative Mode.

If you prefer to skip Creative Mode, you can also restore items through console commands using their item IDs.

Fix 2: Reinstall 7 Days to Die

When deleting the drone files does nothing, the problem probably lives outside the drone system. A full reinstall is the next reasonable step. Your save folder lives inside `%appdata%`, separate from the game install, so as long as you do not touch that folder the world should load normally once the game is back in place.

After reinstalling, jump into your save and play for a few minutes. If the error stays away during normal gameplay, you can consider the issue closed.

When Neither Fix Works

If both methods leave the error in place, the cause is likely tied to your specific hardware, your modlist, or deeper save corruption. At that point it is worth contacting the developers directly with your log files attached so they can take a closer look. Until then, keep one eye on your drone and the other on your render distance.
