Traveling through Hytale's overworld can take time, especially in adventure mode. Mounts help cover more ground quickly, but the system is not fully finished yet. That means riding exists, while true taming and permanent mounted companions are still not part of the current early access setup.

Hytale is in early access, so mounts are not feature-complete. Players cannot fully tame a creature, equip it with permanent mount gear, or keep it as a loyal companion after riding.
However, some animals can still be ridden. At the moment, Rams, Horses, and Skeleton Horses are usable as mounts. The catch is that they do not stay friendly after you dismount. They may run off, avoid you, or attack if you get too close. A quick kick after dismounting is also possible, because apparently transportation comes with opinions.
If you want to ride the same creature more than once, build a pen and keep it contained near your base.
Hytale does not currently allow true animal taming, but horses can be managed with a simple trick. Horses will follow you if you are holding a carrot or a feed bag.
Before dismounting, equip a carrot or feed bag. Then lure the horse into an enclosure at your base. Once it is inside, close the pen so it cannot wander away.
There is one early access issue to keep in mind: horses lured with carrots can sometimes become unmountable for a short time. If the horse is already secured inside a pen, this is more annoying than disastrous. Wait it out and try again later.
Yes, especially for long trips. Sprinting while mounted is extremely fast, making mounts one of the best ways to cross large distances in the current build.
The downside is the extra effort needed to keep the animal nearby after riding. Until mounted creatures can remain friendly or be properly tamed, pens are the most reliable workaround.
Two other creatures currently in Hytale could become mounts later: Camels and Tetrabirds. They cannot be mounted in the current state of the game, but they are reasonable candidates for future rideable creatures.
The development team may also add entirely new mount creatures in later updates. For now, horses, rams, and skeleton horses are the practical choices if you want faster travel.
