Minecraft Story Mode Season 3: Is It Actually Coming Back?

Minecraft·January 12, 2024·6 min read

Telltale Games is officially back from the dead, which has the Minecraft Story Mode community asking the obvious question: will Jesse, Petra, and the rest of the crew get a third season? Here is what is actually on the table right now.

The Short Answer: Probably Not

A third season is not in development. When Telltale collapsed in 2018, the studio lost its Minecraft license, and Mojang never handed it back. Season 2 also tied up the major plot threads, so any continuation would essentially mean starting a brand new arc rather than picking up where Jesse left off.

Could It Still Happen?

In theory, yes. Mojang and the revived Telltale could come to an agreement and unlock a fresh story, and nothing legally prevents them from doing so. The catch is that neither company has hinted at it publicly. The closest sign of life on this front is Mojang's collaboration with Blackbird Interactive on Minecraft Legends, which at least shows the studio is open to outside teams. Thin hope, but hope.

How to Play Seasons 1 and 2 Today

Once the licensing deal expired, Minecraft Story Mode quietly disappeared from nearly every digital storefront. Tracking down a legitimate copy now takes some effort. These are the routes that still work.

Physical Discs and Cartridges

The cleanest option. Boxed releases exist for PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and Windows. If you are shopping for PS3 or Xbox 360, look specifically for the "Complete Adventure" version, otherwise you will only get the first season.

Existing Digital Libraries

If you bought the game before delisting and never deleted it, you can still redownload and play it from the platform where you purchased it. People sometimes claim to sell working Steam keys for cheap, but the legitimate ones are buried under overpriced resales and codes that quietly fail at activation. Not worth the gamble.

YouTube Playthroughs

Watching a full playthrough is the last fallback. You lose the choice-driven part of the experience, but it remains the only zero-cost way to see the entire story end to end.

Looking Ahead

A new season would be great, but with every year that passes, the odds quietly fade. Maybe one day a surprise announcement drops and this article becomes outdated. Until then, the physical disc shelf is your best friend.
