How to Install and Use Litematica in Minecraft

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·14 min read

Litematica is a client-side Minecraft mod that helps you rebuild structures with far less guesswork. It lets you load schematic files, display a ghost version of the build in-game, move that preview into position, and check every block you need before you start placing materials.

If you have ever copied a detailed build from a creative world into survival one block at a time, this is the part where your sanity gets a small refund.

What Litematica Does

Litematica works like an in-game blueprint system. After loading a schematic, Minecraft shows a transparent outline of the structure so you can follow it directly while building. The mod is commonly used with Fabric, though availability can vary depending on Minecraft version and mod loader support.

It is also a client-side tool. That means you normally do not need to install Litematica on the Minecraft server for its core blueprint features to work.

Install Litematica

Before downloading anything, check your Minecraft version and mod loader. Litematica files are version-specific, so a file made for one version may not launch on another.

  1. Go to Litematica on Modrinth or CurseForge.
  2. Download the file that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader.
  3. Check whether the version requires MaLiLib.
  4. If you are using Fabric, install Fabric API when required.
  5. Save the downloaded `.jar` files somewhere easy to find.

Default Minecraft Launcher

Use these steps if you manage mods manually through the regular Minecraft Launcher.

  1. Install Fabric or Forge for the Minecraft version you want to use.
  2. Open the Minecraft Launcher.
  3. Go to the Installations tab.
  4. Click the folder icon beside your modded profile.
  5. Open the `mods` folder, or create one if it is missing.
  6. Move Litematica and any required dependency `.jar` files into that folder.
  7. Launch Minecraft using the matching Fabric or Forge profile.

CurseForge or Other Mod Launchers

Third-party launchers usually handle the folder work for you.

  1. Open the launcher and select your profile or modpack.
  2. Choose Add More Content, Install Mods, or the equivalent option.
  3. Search for Litematica.
  4. Install the mod and confirm any dependencies.
  5. Start the game from that same profile.

Open the Litematica Menu

Most Litematica features are controlled through menus and keybinds. Press M in-game to open the main menu. From there, you can load schematics, manage placements, and access the tools used for building.

For deeper settings, press M + C to open the configuration menu. This is where you can adjust rendering options, change keybinds, and tune the mod if the default controls are fighting with another mod.

Load a Schematic File

Litematica needs your schematic file to be in the right folder before it appears in-game. Most files use `.litematic` or `.schem` formats.

Open your `.minecraft` directory and look for a folder named `schematics`. If it does not exist, create it manually. Place your schematic file inside that folder, then return to Minecraft.

Press M, choose Load Schematics, select the file you want, and click Load Schematic. The schematic is now active, although it may not be sitting exactly where you want it yet.

Move and Rotate the Preview

When a schematic first loads, the ghost preview can appear underground, above you, or nowhere useful at all. To fix that, press M, open Schematic Placements, select your loaded schematic, and choose Configure.

This placement menu lets you adjust the preview with X, Y, and Z controls. You can rotate the schematic, nudge it block by block, or use Move to Player to snap the preview near your current position. Once it lines up with the terrain or foundation, you can start building directly against the guide.

Check Required Materials

For survival projects, the material list is one of Litematica's best features. After loading a schematic, press M + L to open the material list window.

This list shows the blocks and items needed for the full build. It can also track what is still missing as you gather resources, turning a large project into a practical shopping list instead of a chest-opening marathon.

Build From the Blueprint

Once the schematic is placed and the materials are gathered, the rest is straightforward: follow the ghost blocks, place the matching materials, and work through the structure section by section.

Litematica is especially useful for redstone builds, large storage systems, custom bases, farms, and decorative structures where one wrong block can cause a lot of troubleshooting. With the blueprint visible in-game, complex builds become much easier to copy accurately.
