Will Minecraft Add Sheep Variants?

Minecraft·February 28, 2025·5 min read

Minecraft’s newer mob updates made pigs, cows, and chickens feel more connected to the biomes where they spawn. Sheep, however, did not receive the same warm and cold visual variants. That left players wondering whether sheep variants are planned for a later update.

Warm and Cold Mob Variants

The update added warm and cold biome variants for three of Minecraft’s four original passive mobs. Sheep are the exception.

Cold biome variants spawn in old-growth pine taiga, old-growth spruce taiga, taiga, snowy taiga, windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills, and windswept forest biomes.

Warm variants spawn in savanna, savanna plateau, windswept savanna, jungle, sparse jungle, bamboo jungle, eroded badlands, wooded badlands, and badlands biomes.

Are Sheep Variants Coming to Minecraft?

At the time covered by the source, sheep variants do not appear to be planned. Instead of giving sheep separate warm and cold models, Mojang changed the wool colors sheep are more likely to spawn with in different climate groups.

In cold biomes, sheep are more likely to spawn with black wool. Gray, light gray, white, and brown sheep can still appear, but they are rarer.

In warm biomes, brown wool is more common. Gray, light gray, white, and black sheep can still spawn, but less often.

In temperate biomes, white wool remains the common result. Gray, light gray, black, and brown wool colors are rarer there.

Pink sheep still have a very small chance to spawn anywhere, because Minecraft has wisely preserved at least one tiny chaos feature.

So, are full sheep variants coming? Maybe someday, but there was no sign of that in the source. For now, sheep variety comes from biome-based wool color chances rather than separate mob designs.
