A familiar face has reappeared on the Minecraft website lately, and a lot of players have been wondering what is going on. The character is called Merl, and while the name might sound new to some, the story behind this comeback is actually a few years old. Here is the full breakdown of who Merl is and the role they are playing in 2025.

Merl first showed up as the mascot of Minecraft Earth, the augmented reality mobile spin-off that Mojang quietly shelved during the COVID-19 era. Most fans assumed the character had been retired along with the game, possibly waiting in storage for an eventual Earth revival. That revival has not happened. Instead, Mojang brought Merl back in a very different role: powering the studio's AI support chat.

Visit the Minecraft Help Center and you will spot a small chat bubble in the bottom right corner with Merl waiting above it. Clicking it opens a live conversation window, with an animated feed of Merl on the left side reacting as you type. If you turn on audio, the character will even speak the answers out loud.
The scope of what Merl can handle is narrow on purpose. The bot is trained on Minecraft gameplay topics and the official support articles, so questions about logins, account recovery, billing, or general game features land in their wheelhouse. Ask anything off-topic, like which mob makes the best snack, and you will most likely get a polite "I don't know" in response.

People usually reach for support when something is already broken, and AI chatbots have a track record of testing patience in exactly those moments. A chunk of the community worries that Merl is the first step toward Mojang quietly downsizing its human support pipeline, a concern that feels less paranoid every time another big studio leans harder on automation. The fact that Merl falls back to "I don't know" even on questions that should be in their training data does not help the case.
For now, the human-staffed ticket system is still alive and well. If Merl cannot solve your problem, you can still open a regular ticket here and reach an actual person.
