Where to Get Trial Keys and Ominous Trial Keys in Minecraft 1.21

Minecraft 1.21 fills trial chambers with locked vaults, but opening them requires the right key. Regular trial keys and ominous trial keys both come from chamber challenges, just not the same ones.

Finding Trial Keys

Trial keys are found inside trial chambers. Clearing a trial spawner gives it a 50% chance to eject a trial key as loot once the fight is complete.

There are also a few extra places to check. Trial keys can appear in the trial chamber entrance chest, and they may be found in pots scattered through the halls.

Finding Ominous Trial Keys

Ominous trial keys drop from ominous trial spawners. Clearing one gives a 30% chance for an ominous trial key to be ejected.

Ominous trial spawners are not present by default. Drink an ominous bottle near trial spawners to transform nearby spawners into their ominous form. The warning label is implied: these versions spawn better-equipped enemies, fire projectiles, and drop potions from above.

What Trial Keys Open

Trial keys open regular vault blocks in trial chambers. Each player on a server can claim rewards from a vault once, as long as they have their own trial key.

Ominous trial keys open rarer ominous vaults. To tell the two apart, look at the base of the vault. Regular vaults use copper, while ominous vaults have diamond.

Clear trial spawners for trial keys, use ominous bottles to create ominous trial spawners, then survive the harder challenge for ominous trial keys. With enough keys, the vaults inside trial chambers stop being decorative locked boxes.
