When Mojang celebrated Minecraft's tenth birthday in May 2019, the studio dropped a curveball that nobody saw coming. A new title called Minecraft Earth promised to bring the sandbox into the physical world through augmented reality on iOS and Android. After a closed beta starting July 16th and a rolling country-by-country rollout, the game went global on December 11th, 2019.
Built on Bedrock Edition's engine, Minecraft Earth let players gather, craft, and build wherever they happened to be standing. The first week alone saw 1.4 million downloads, and Time Magazine slotted it into the top 100 inventions of 2019 soon after.
The core loop stayed familiar, but the AR layer brought fresh mechanics:
Rubies funded most of the experience. They unlocked new buildplates, extra slots for crafting and smelting, and timer skips on those same processes. You could grind them for free, but Mojang clearly preferred you reach for the credit card.
The recognition followed fast. Minecraft Earth picked up Best VR/AR Game at the Game Critics Awards along with the Coney Island Dreamland Award at the New York Game Awards.
Heading into 2020, every signal pointed to a long, profitable life: strong player counts, a workable free-to-play model, and a content roadmap stretching forward.
Then a pandemic hit a game built entirely around going outside.
On January 5th, 2021, Mojang confirmed Minecraft Earth would shut down on June 30th of that same year. The reason was straightforward. The world had stopped being a safe place to wander around for digital loot, and a title designed to encourage walks, parks, and neighborhood exploration could not work when stepping outside was a public health concern.
The final months were less of a wind-down and more of a thank-you note. Mojang gutted the time gates, slashed ruby costs, removed every real-money transaction, and pushed all the unreleased finished content into the live build. Anyone who logged in during that final stretch also unlocked an exclusive set of character creator items.
On the shutdown date, the game disappeared from both app stores. Anyone still launching the app got this farewell instead of gameplay:
Dear Minecraft Earth players,
>
We have been on an amazing adventure together, bringing the wonder of Minecraft into the real world. We have built masterpieces, collected amazing new mobs, and even dug deep into the ground on incredible Epic adventures.
>
We have made the difficult discussion to end support for Minecraft Earth as of June 30th, 2021.
>
Thanks for playing and we hope to see you in Minecraft.

Unspent rubies converted into Minecoins for use in the Minecraft Marketplace. Players who had ever made a purchase received a free copy of Minecraft Bedrock Edition as a parting gift.
For now, Minecraft Earth sits next to Minecraft: Story Mode as one of Mojang's only canceled spin-offs. The technology still exists, the brand still has fans, and if the studio ever decides AR is worth another swing, the foundation is already there. Until that happens, Minecraft Earth lives on as a short, strange chapter in the franchise's history, a reminder that sometimes the timing matters as much as the idea.
