Released in 2014 and officially launched in 2017, Unturned by Smartly Dressed Games still pulls in players nearly a decade later. Free updates keep arriving, the community stays loud, and the price tag is the friendliest possible: nothing.
So what makes a blocky zombie game stick around this long?

Unturned is a free-to-play survival shooter set in a world overrun by the undead. The visuals are deliberately simple, the gameplay loop is satisfying, and the focus leans heavily toward player versus player encounters. Between zombie waves, you scavenge supplies, reinforce a base, and try to rebuild whatever pieces of civilization you can hold onto.
Other survivors will not make this easy. Without solid walls and a few trusted friends, your camp can disappear overnight. Nothing stops you from being the group doing the raiding instead.
Each map is large, dense with loot, and packed with threats both rotting and natural. Hunger, exposure, and resource scarcity push you forward as much as the zombies do. Once you stockpile enough materials, the game opens up into base building, vehicle upgrades, and an optional NPC questline for solo-friendly progression.
Single player works, but Unturned really clicks online. Every survival mechanic stays in place, except now there are other humans deciding whether to trade with you, recruit you, or torch your front door at 3 a.m. Expect raids, ambushes, and the occasional unlikely alliance.
Maps are scattered with firearms, melee weapons, medical supplies, building parts, and pre-apocalypse household items. Vehicles cover land, water, and air, which matters when your destination is on the other side of a hostile island.

Six official maps draw from real geography: Prince Edward Island, the Yukon, Washington, Russia, Hawaii, and Germany. The community has produced many more through workshop releases, so fresh ground is never far away.
Mod support runs straight through the Steam Workshop. Hundreds of custom maps, gameplay overhauls, weapon packs, and curated mod collections are one click away, and most of them run cleanly on dedicated servers.
Eight years in, the update cadence has not slowed. The development team is small but active, and content additions land regularly. The graphics are blocky, sure, but most players come around to the style within an hour. It is part of the identity at this point.
For zero dollars, the value is hard to argue with. Active reviews, frequent updates, and a steady stream of community content suggest Unturned is not going anywhere. Even if today is not the day, there is no rush. The servers will still be there next week.
