What Is the Use of a Dedicated IP in the Minecraft Universe?

As a Minecraft server provider, we offer our clients the option to acquire dedicated IP addresses for a small additional fee. It’s important to understand the reason behind this charge: IP addresses are a limited resource, so we apply a nominal cost, although ideally, we would provide them for free to all clients.

Opting for a dedicated IP means your server will be assigned a unique address composed of four numbers separated by dots (e.g., #.#.#.#), and the server will operate on port 25565, the default for Minecraft. If no port is specified along with the IP, the Minecraft client will automatically connect through this port.

Why Consider a Dedicated IP?

Here are some factors that might influence your decision when evaluating whether to include a dedicated IP in your Minecraft server hosting package:

1. Connecting a Domain Name: If you want your server address to be something like yourdomain.com, you’ll need to purchase that domain through a service like GoDaddy. Keep in mind that yourdomain.com is not a dedicated IP, but a domain name that can redirect to your server’s IP. This process is configured in the domain’s DNS settings. Once set up, you can connect to your server using either the domain name or the IP.

2. How to Get a Custom IP for Your Minecraft Server:If you already have a domain, you have two options:

  • Redirect the domain (e.g., yourdomain.com) directly to your server’s IP.

  • Use a subdomain (e.g., play.yourdomain.com) for the server while reserving the main domain for your website.

After creating an A record in your DNS manager pointing to your server’s IP, no further configuration is needed. Without a dedicated IP, you must set up an SRV record to define the server port because an A record alone cannot specify a port. Understanding how to implement SRV records is essential if you do not have a dedicated IP.

Is a Dedicated IP Necessary for My Minecraft Server?

  • Recommended: In most cases, a dedicated IP simplifies server setup and provides a unique address that no one else can use.

  • Not always required: We provide free subdomains (e.g., yourserver.holy.gg) and handle all necessary configuration. This makes it easy to get a named address for your server without needing a dedicated IP. During checkout, simply specify your desired subdomain, and it will be created when the order is processed.
