Vault Hunters Update 15: New Talents, Abilities, Bingo Objectives, and SMP Season 4

Vault Hunters Update 15 is finally live. After a few schedule shifts, players now have an exact date to circle on the calendar, and Iskall85, developer of the Vault Hunters modpack and the Vault Hunters SMP, has walked through everything shipping with this release. Below is the full breakdown of new content, plus why this might be the right moment to roll a new character.

Release Date: Tuesday, August 6th

After delays, Update 15 dropped on Tuesday, August 6th. Update 16 will eventually close out the third edition with the long-awaited end-game progression, but Iskall is clear that Update 15 is not a placeholder release.

In his own words: "The most important thing with Update 15 is that this is a great time to reset. It's a great time to start fresh. The systems are there; we aren't changing the base systems. You're going to be able to play at a pace where, when Update 16 comes with content at level 100, you aren't going to be missing out."

In other words, anyone who bounced off Vault Hunters last year can return now without the save going stale in two months.

Why This Update Is a Big Deal

Iskall puts it bluntly: "Update 15 is the biggest Vault Hunters update since Update 9." Ten new talents, two new abilities, a brand new objective type, and a reworked classic ability are all in the patch. Even without unique items (more on those below), the build variety alone gives veterans plenty to chew on.

Ten New Talents

Talents shape how a character specializes during a run, and Update 15 adds ten of them. Most of the new options revolve around two themes: stacking buffs after kills, and rewards for staying above 80% health.

  • Blazing: +2% movement speed per mob killed, stackable, with duration scaling per talent point invested.
  • Arcana: +20% mana regeneration on kill, same stacking mechanic.
  • Lucky Momentum: +1% lucky hit chance per kill, stackable.
  • Frenzy: +2.5% attack speed per kill, stackable.
  • Treasure Seeker: improved item rarity while above 80% health.
  • Bountiful Harvest: increased item quantity while above 80% health.
  • Prime Amplification: larger area of effect while above 80% health.
  • Purist: bonus damage scaled to the number of Scrappy armor pieces equipped.
  • Discipline: official text is still pending. Iskall describes it as a benefit tied to a low mana pool, where a higher max mana actively weakens the effect.
  • Hunter's Instinct: kills carry a small chance to trigger Hunter senses, revealing every POI around the dead mob.

The kill-stacking talents favor aggressive, fast-clearing playstyles, while the health-gated talents pair well with sturdier builds that try never to drop below the threshold.

Two New Abilities

Ability options also grow with this patch.

  • Ice Bolt: summon a small bolt that deals no damage but chills hit mobs for a set duration. Eight levels of scaling.
  • Hunter (rework): highlights every POI in a radius for a short duration. POIs include chests, coins, gold altars, and objective markers. The reworked version has a single level and no specializations, simplifying its place in the kit.

Ice Bolt is the obvious new toy, but the Hunter rework is the bigger quality-of-life shift, especially for players who like sweeping vaults clean before the timer pressures them out.

Two New Objectives

Vault Hunters now ships with five main objective types after Update 15 adds two more.

  • Bingo Cards: each run rolls a randomized bingo card filled with challenges. Completing a full row or column ends the objective successfully, turning every vault into a small puzzle about which tasks to prioritize. Iskall is fairly enthusiastic about this one: "It's so addicting. In fact, it's so addicting that while I was working on development, in between my family vacation, I had to get out my laptop to play some bingos every day. It's a real dungeoncrawler objective. You want to do better every time."
  • Boss Objectives: a returning objective that has been, according to Iskall, "recreated to better fit the game." Hunt down specific bosses to finish the run.

Bingo Cards in particular reward route planning, so expect a short learning curve while figuring out which challenge clusters are realistic to clear in a single dive.

Unique Items Pushed to Update 16

Unique items were originally part of the Update 15 plans, but the team pulled them. About 18 were ready, yet Iskall chose to wait and ship roughly 30 well-balanced uniques in Update 16 rather than rush a half-batch now. Since these items will have static rolls and become chase pieces for builds, a few months of polish seems like a fair trade.

Vault Hunters SMP Season 4

For anyone who wants to see Update 15 in action before committing to a personal world, Vault Hunters SMP Season 4 is already running on the new update ahead of the public drop. The roster brings in newcomers like Martyn from Yogscast alongside returning faces such as 5up and CaptainSparklez, so there is plenty of long-form footage covering the new talents, abilities, and objectives in real play.

For players planning a reset or a first-time run, Update 15 is the cleanest on-ramp Vault Hunters has had in a long while, and Update 16 will pick up exactly where these systems leave off.
