Defeating Moder, the Frost Dragon of Valheim

Of all the bosses Valheim throws at you, Moder is the one that punishes sloppy preparation the most. Skip a step and you will either freeze on the way up or eat a face full of ice breath two minutes into the encounter. This guide covers both halves of the problem: getting her to show up, and getting her to fall down.

Finding the Summoning Altar

Moder lives in the Mountain biome, an environment that does not particularly care whether you survive. Before going altar hunting, stock up on Frost Resistance Mead or get into Wolf armor. Cold damage will kill you in the open faster than the dragon will.

Altar locations are randomized per world, but Runestones found in Burial Chambers and Sunken Crypts will eventually point you to one. Read a few and the marker will appear on your map.

Gathering Three Dragon Eggs

Eggs sit in nests around the peaks, usually with Drakes patrolling nearby. The fights themselves are manageable. The weight is the real obstacle. A single egg weighs 200 units, so you can carry exactly one at a time before turning into a slow-motion target.

Dragon Eggs also cannot travel through portals, the same restriction that applies to ore and metals. A forward base near the Mountains with a longship docked nearby saves a lot of trips. Once all three eggs are placed on the altar, interact with it and Moder will arrive.

Beating the Dragon

Moder cycles between two phases, and reading which one is active is the whole fight.

In the air, she hovers and drops ice projectiles in wide patterns. This is your cue to take cover. The Mountain biome is full of rocks, ledges and twisted trees, and Moder has terrible aim against anything behind solid geometry. Move between cover spots when shots pause, then loose arrows whenever the sky clears.

On the ground, she switches to wide melee swipes and a cone-shaped frost breath. Every hit applies a heavy slow, which is the real danger here. One stack is annoying, two leaves you crawling while she lines up the kill. Stay at range during the landing unless you see a clean opening for a few hammer or sword swings.

Loadout Recommendations

  • Bow: Draugr Fang if you have it. Huntsman Bow works as a backup.
  • Arrows: Needle Arrows are best, Iron Arrows are fine otherwise.
  • Food: Top-tier health and stamina options. Lox pie, serpent stew, blood pudding.
  • Mead: Frost Resistance Mead plus healing meads.
  • Armor: Wolf Armor with a cape, or Padded Armor if you prefer the higher defense rating.

After the Kill

Moder drops two Dragon Tears, the material used to craft the Artisan Table. That table unlocks the Blast Furnace and Spinning Wheel, which gate Black Metal gear and the next stretch of progression. Build it, refresh your gear, and start scouting the Plains for Yagluth.
