Joining a Valheim Server by IP or Community Browser

Overview

Valheim drops players into a procedurally generated Norse survival world filled with crafting, building, exploration, and enough angry creatures to keep everyone humble. You can play solo or share the world with up to 9 other players on a server.

If you are new to multiplayer, joining a Valheim server is not always obvious. The two most common options are connecting with a direct IP address or finding the server in the Community browser.

Join With a Server IP

  1. Open the HolyHosting server panel and log in.
  2. Find the server `IP Address:Port` value, then copy it.
  1. Launch Valheim and select Start Game.
  2. Create a new character or choose an existing one, then press Start.
  3. Open the Join Game tab and select Join IP.
  1. Paste the copied IP address, then press Connect.

Join Through the Community Browser

  1. Launch Valheim and select Start Game.
  2. Create or select your character, then press Start.
  3. Go to Join Game and make sure Community is selected.
  1. Choose the server you want from the community list, then press Connect.

Common Problems

Failed to Connect error: This usually means Valheim cannot reach the server. Restart the server from the panel, wait a minute or two, then try again. If it still fails, copy the IP address directly from the panel and paste it into the Join IP field to avoid typos.

The server asks for a password: Many public community servers require a password. If your own server asks for one unexpectedly, open the HolyHosting server panel, go to the server customization settings, and make sure the password field is blank. Restart the server afterward, then try joining again.
