Frost Caves in Valheim: Locations, Enemies, Loot, and Survival Tips

Valheim·March 8, 2022·16 min read

Valheim keeps growing well past its launch, and Frost Caves remain one of the most rewarding biome dungeons in the game. They hand out rare crafting materials, but they also punish carelessness. Here is the practical breakdown of where to find them, what lurks inside, and how to leave alive.

Where to Find Frost Caves

Frost Caves only spawn in the Mountain biome, which already implies a few prerequisites. You need decent gear, frost resistance (mead, capes, or fur cloaks), and ideally a couple of bosses already on your trophy wall.

Spotting them is not too hard once you know the silhouette. The entrances are framed by jagged spiky rocks with huge icicles hanging from the ceiling, and they stand out clearly against the cliffs and snowy slopes.

Tip: explore unmapped Mountain zones. Frost Caves only generate in regions you have not visited before the update.

What Enemies Live Inside

The interior is patrolled by a small but nasty roster, plus environmental hazards.

Expect to fight:

  • Ulv: wolf-like predators that hit hard and travel in packs.
  • Cultists: humanoid casters that breathe fire.
  • Bats: fast and quick to surround you.
  • Stone Golems: rare guests that only show up in caves containing a frozen lake.
  • Falling icicles, triggered when you swing wildly at the wrong ceiling.

Enemy density varies. Some chambers hold one or two foes, others are full lairs. The smart play is to sneak in slowly, peek every corner, and pull groups one at a time. Charging in like a regular Mountain skirmish ends quickly, and not in your favor.

What Loot You Can Find

So why dive in at all? Because the rewards justify the funeral expenses.

Inside, Frost Caves offer combinations of:

  • Chests with assorted goodies
  • Crystals
  • Fenris Hair and Fenris Claw
  • Red Jute
  • Iron, Bronze, Coal
  • Silver Necklaces

Some materials drop from enemies, others come from breaking objects inside the cave. Red Jute curtains are especially worth pulling, but be careful: cultists love hiding behind them.

The Patch That Added Frost Caves

Frost Caves arrived with patch 0.207.20, known as The Mountains Update. It introduced not just the dungeon itself but a chunk of related gear, materials, and quality of life work.

New Content

  • Frost Caves added as a new dungeon (only generates in unexplored areas).
  • New enemies: Ulv, Cultist, Bat.
  • New crafting materials: Red Jute, Fenring Hair, Fenring Claw.
  • New armor sets: Fenris Coat, Fenris Leggings, Fenris Hood (full set bonus when worn together).
  • New weapon: Flesh Rippers (fists).
  • New build pieces: red jute carpet, red jute curtain, standing brazier.
  • New event: "You stirred the cauldron".

Fixes and Improvements

  • FPS limiter and option to reduce GPU usage when minimized. Menu capped at 60 FPS.
  • Various console command additions, see `help` in console.
  • Fixed dungeon ends that were not fully deterministic.
  • Nomap mode tweaks: vegvisr alternative, server-side toggle, shouting distance cap, randomized build/spawn rotation, new `noportals` command.
  • Resolution settings now only show refresh rate when forcing exclusive fullscreen.

UI Changes

  • Unarmed skill renamed to Fists.
  • Helmets covering the face now hide the beard.
  • "Reduce background performance" setting added.
  • Holiday recipes (Jack-o-turnip, Yule items) disabled outside of the season.

Quality of Life

  • Pause function in singleplayer.
  • Building marker is subtler and shows piece rotation.
  • Corpse run grants a carry weight buffer to compensate for an unequipped belt.
  • Crafting stackable items with a full inventory now works if a slot can stack.
  • Take-All button bug fixed for stackable items.
  • Chat closes with Esc, mouse, or gamepad B.
  • Signs can be placed without a workbench.
  • Armor stand supports atgeirs and shield styles.
  • Split dialogue accepts numeric input.

Full Controller and Steam Deck Support

  • Full controller mapping for every game feature.
  • Controller legend visible in pause menu and settings.
  • Gamepad text input when running through Steam Big Picture, useful for chat, character names, signs, and pets.
  • Context menus always show controller buttons when a gamepad is active.
  • Alternative glyph style option.
  • Skills window scrollable with gamepad.
  • Crafting can be cancelled by pressing the button again, like with mouse.
  • Steam Deck specific layout and default settings when the game detects a Deck.

Localization

  • Improvements for several community-translated languages.

Wrapping Up

Frost Caves are not the longest dungeon in the game, but they are dense, dangerous, and worth running once your Mountain gear is solid. Bring food, frost resistance, a ranged option for cultists, and patience. If you want a permanent base camp to farm Crystals and Fenris materials with friends, hosting a dedicated Valheim server keeps progress alive between sessions and turns these runs into a group sport.
