Valheim keeps growing well past its launch, and Frost Caves remain one of the most rewarding biome dungeons in the game. They hand out rare crafting materials, but they also punish carelessness. Here is the practical breakdown of where to find them, what lurks inside, and how to leave alive.
Frost Caves only spawn in the Mountain biome, which already implies a few prerequisites. You need decent gear, frost resistance (mead, capes, or fur cloaks), and ideally a couple of bosses already on your trophy wall.

Spotting them is not too hard once you know the silhouette. The entrances are framed by jagged spiky rocks with huge icicles hanging from the ceiling, and they stand out clearly against the cliffs and snowy slopes.
Tip: explore unmapped Mountain zones. Frost Caves only generate in regions you have not visited before the update.
The interior is patrolled by a small but nasty roster, plus environmental hazards.

Expect to fight:
Enemy density varies. Some chambers hold one or two foes, others are full lairs. The smart play is to sneak in slowly, peek every corner, and pull groups one at a time. Charging in like a regular Mountain skirmish ends quickly, and not in your favor.
So why dive in at all? Because the rewards justify the funeral expenses.
Inside, Frost Caves offer combinations of:
Some materials drop from enemies, others come from breaking objects inside the cave. Red Jute curtains are especially worth pulling, but be careful: cultists love hiding behind them.
Frost Caves arrived with patch 0.207.20, known as The Mountains Update. It introduced not just the dungeon itself but a chunk of related gear, materials, and quality of life work.
Frost Caves are not the longest dungeon in the game, but they are dense, dangerous, and worth running once your Mountain gear is solid. Bring food, frost resistance, a ranged option for cultists, and patience. If you want a permanent base camp to farm Crystals and Fenris materials with friends, hosting a dedicated Valheim server keeps progress alive between sessions and turns these runs into a group sport.
