Valheim Farming Guide: Cultivators, Seeds, and Crops

Valheim·February 20, 2021·6 min read

Food is one of Valheim's most important supplies because each unique meal temporarily raises maximum health and stamina. Since you cannot eat three stacks of the same food at once, a good Viking diet needs variety.

That is where farming helps. It gives you a steady way to grow useful ingredients instead of relying only on whatever the wilderness offers.

Farming in Valheim

Valheim does not let you farm immediately after spawning. Before planting crops, you need to unlock the right tool.

Unlocking the Cultivator

To start farming, summon and defeat Eikthyr, the first boss. After that, you can craft the Cultivator at your Forge.

The Cultivator prepares arable soil, which is required for planting seeds and growing crops.

Finding Seeds

Once the ground is ready, you need seeds. They must be found in the wild rather than crafted at the start.

For food crops, look for:

  • Carrot Seeds in the Black Forest
  • Turnip Seeds in the Swamp

You can also use the Cultivator to plant trees when wood is needed. Just remember that falling trees can hit hard, because Valheim respects physics and dislikes complacency.

Growing and Harvesting Crops

Plant seeds in cultivated soil and wait for them to grow. Once ready, harvest the crop for food.

Harvested plants do not return seeds, so every new crop requires another seed run. Farming builds food variety, but it does not fully replace exploring.
