Valheim Dedicated Server Hosting Guide for Multiplayer Worlds

Valheim·March 20, 2021·9 min read

Valheim grew quickly in early access, selling over 3 million copies in less than a month. The appeal is easy to understand: a dangerous magical world, big boss fights, questionable construction projects, and the ability to bring friends along.

A normal Valheim multiplayer lobby works fine for short sessions, but anyone who wants the world online around the clock should consider a dedicated server.

Standard Valheim Multiplayer Hosting

Creating a regular multiplayer lobby in Valheim is simple. Start a world, choose whether to use a password, invite friends, and play.

The catch is that the world depends on the lobby host. When the host closes the game, the world goes offline too. That is the main reason players move to dedicated server hosting.

A Valheim dedicated server keeps the world separate from one player's active game session. When configured correctly, it can provide steadier access, better uptime, and a more consistent multiplayer experience.

How to Host a Valheim Dedicated Server

A dedicated server is the practical upgrade for a Valheim group that wants a shared world available more reliably.

Follow these steps to set it up through Steam:

  1. Open your Steam library and look for Valheim Dedicated Server under Tools. Tools must be toggled on first.
  2. Install the Valheim Dedicated Server program, then open its folder.
  3. Decide whether the dedicated server will run on your own machine or on a separate computer.
  4. If using another machine, open the Valheim folder, find the Worlds folder, and transfer those world files to the computer hosting the server. Skip this step if hosting on the same machine.
  5. Go to the default server install path: `C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Valheim Dedicated Server`.
  6. Right-click `start_headless_server` and select edit.
  7. Find the values for `name`, `world`, and `password` in the file.
  8. Replace `name` with the server name players will see. This must be different from the world save name.
  9. Replace `world` with the world save name. This must be different from the server name.
  10. Replace `password` with the server password you want players to use.
  11. Run `start_headless_server` to bring the server online.
  12. Players can find the server in the community listings if it is public, or through Steam by opening View, then Servers, then the Favorites tab.

Using a Valheim Server Hosting Service

Some players want a Valheim server without handling the machine, files, uptime, or maintenance themselves. In that case, a server hosting service is the easier route.

Hosted servers can offer performance support, backups, management tools, assistance, and fewer home-network headaches. The wider hosting market reflects that demand too, with the global web hosting services market expected to grow from $102 billion in value to $321.5 billion by 2025.

For players who want a Valheim world online without managing the full setup manually, a hosted option can be the cleaner choice.
