Picking up stray branches works fine for the first few minutes in Valheim, but those flimsy planks will not carry a serious build or a proper bronze loadout. Once basic Wood stops cutting it (pun acknowledged), Core Wood is the next material on the shopping list. It is sturdier, unlocks dozens of recipes, and asks for a bit more effort to collect.
Here is where to track it down, what gear you need, and what you can actually build with it.

Core Wood comes from Pine trees, and Pine trees grow exclusively in the Black Forest biome. If you have only seen birch and oak so far, you are still in the Meadows and need to keep walking.
A regular Flint Axe will not touch a Pine. You need at least a Stone Axe, crafted at the workbench from 5x Wood and 4x Stone. Any higher tier (Bronze, Iron, Black Metal) also works.
One small warning: Pine trees are big, and they fall in the direction you push them. Stand under one as it tips over and Valheim will happily reset your run. Watch the lean, then step aside before the trunk hits the ground.

Core Wood is not a single-use resource. It feeds tools, weapons, structural pieces, and a few late-game stations. Here are the recipes that call for it, grouped by category.
Core Wood is also a solid Coal source. Drop it into a Charcoal Kiln and it burns down into fuel for the Forge and the Blast Furnace.
If you are tired of dodging Greydwarves while logging, the developer console can spawn Core Wood straight into your inventory. Useful for testing builds, less satisfying if you wanted the run to feel earned.
