Valheim Yagluth Guide: Summoning and Defeating the Final Boss

Valheim·April 18, 2021·9 min read

Valheim does not hand out easy victories. Between hostile biomes, food management, and creatures that hit harder the deeper you progress, the game keeps the pressure on. Its bosses sit at the top of that difficulty curve, and Yagluth is the one waiting at the end of the current roster.

This guide covers how to find his altar, what to bring, and how to survive the fight long enough to actually finish the game in its current state.

Finding the Yagluth Summoning Altar

Yagluth lives in the Plains biome, the same place that produces the goblins you have probably already learned to fear. Before you can summon him, you need to locate his altar, which is scattered somewhere across those golden grasslands.

Searching every Plains tile by hand is miserable. The shortcut is to read every Runestone you come across in dungeons and ruins. These stones will sometimes mark the altar's position on your map, which saves you hours of swimming, running, and dodging Deathsquitos.

Summoning Requirements

Once you have the altar pinned, the offering is straightforward in concept and painful in practice. You need 5 Fuling Totems, which only drop from Fulings, the same goblins guarding most of the Plains.

A few tips before you go hunting:

  • Clear Fuling villages instead of picking off individuals. The totems are more common there.
  • Bring a bow. Fulings hit hard up close and tend to travel in groups.
  • Watch for Berserkers and Shamans. Both can ruin a confident melee approach.

With five totems in hand, place them around the altar and interact with it to start the fight.

Preparing for the Fight

Yagluth is a skeletal half-corpse sticking out of the ground, and somehow that is the least threatening part of him. He hits hard, his attacks cover a wide area, and the arena stays dark for the duration of the fight.

Before you summon him, stack the deck in your favor:

  • Food: cook three high-tier foods that mix health and stamina. Lox Pie, Serpent Stew, and Blood Pudding are common picks at this stage.
  • Armor: padded armor from the Plains tier is the baseline. Anything earlier and you will feel it.
  • Weapons: a Draugr Fang bow with Needle arrows handles ranged work. A Frostner or Porcupine covers melee windows.
  • Mead: bring Healing Mead and Fire Resistance Mead. The second one is not optional.

While you are gathering supplies, expect a complication. Once Yagluth becomes available to summon, the game starts triggering raids where Fulings attack your base. Build defensive walls and earthworks ahead of time so you do not lose a workbench while baking pies.

Yagluth's Attacks

Three abilities make up most of his kit, and learning the windups is the whole fight.

  1. Blue fist slam. His hand glows blue, he punches the ground, and the impact leaves a burning patch for a few seconds. Back off when you see the blue glow and let the flame die before re-engaging.
  2. Fire breath cone. He rears back, then exhales a straight line of fire that shreds health bars. Strafe sideways. Never stand directly in front of him.
  3. Meteor strike. His hand glows orange instead of blue. Slam follows, then meteors rain down in a wide radius. Sprint out of the marked zone and do not stop moving.

The arena is locked in permanent night, and weather effects do not extinguish his flames. Treat every burning patch as a no-go zone until it fades on its own.

Closing the Fight

Once you have the dodge timings down, the rest is patience. Hold range with your bow, close in for two or three swings when he commits to a slow attack, then back out before the next windup. Healing Mead covers the mistakes.

When Yagluth finally drops, you have officially cleared Valheim's current endgame. Pick up his trophy, mount it back at your base, and start thinking about what you want to build now that nothing is left to kill you in the Plains. For about a week, anyway.
