Animals You Can Tame in Valheim

Valheim has plenty of wildlife across its different zones. Most of the time, players hunt those creatures, but some can be tamed instead.

Tamed animals can help with base defense, provide meat and leather, and make a settlement feel less empty. A fenced animal pen is also a nice visual upgrade, assuming the animals stay inside like civilized little chaos machines.

Wolves

Wolves live in the cold mountain regions of Valheim and are dangerous if you are not prepared. They can chase players down quickly, which makes taming them risky.

To tame wolves, lure them into a shelter using meat, then lock them inside. Keep feeding them and make sure the shelter survives long enough for the taming process to finish.

Wolves are especially valuable because they can become companions. Once tamed, they can follow players and help guard them. They can also breed, allowing you to grow a larger pack over time.

Boars

Boars are the easiest animals to tame and are usually the best first attempt. They appear throughout Valheim’s early zones and can still be dangerous for new players, especially in groups.

To tame boars, bait them into a pen with vegetables, then close them in. Feed them daily while they remain safely enclosed. The source guide highlights carrots as the best food option.

Once tamed, boars can be bred to increase the size of the group, giving you a more reliable supply over time.

Lox

Lox are large, dangerous reptile-like creatures, and taming one is more of a personal challenge than a beginner project.

Unlike boars and wolves, lox should not be enclosed first. The source guide notes that you need to tame the lox before building the pen around it.

Lox cannot be bred, but a tamed lox can still be useful as a powerful security option when released near threats. It is not subtle, but subtle is rarely the point of owning a giant battle lizard.
