Valheim on Xbox gives console players the same brutal survival sandbox that PC players know well, including the option to use commands. Commands can help with simple chat actions, server moderation, or singleplayer testing tools like flight and god mode. Very responsible Viking behavior, usually.
Before any of that works, the in-game console has to be enabled with a controller button combination. That step is easy to miss because Valheim does not put a large menu button in front of you for it. Once the console is enabled, opening and closing it becomes much faster.
Join your Valheim world or server first. While in-game, press and hold this controller combination:
LT + RT + LB + RB + Options/Menu
After the console is enabled, it should appear on the screen. You do not need to repeat the full button combination every time. From then on, press Left Stick + Right Stick to show or hide the console.

Xbox does not automatically show the typing keyboard when the console appears. Press A to bring up the keyboard, then enter the command you want to run. If the command needs a target, such as a player name or ID, type it exactly to avoid the console politely doing nothing.

Valheim has many console commands, but Xbox players should know that not every command works everywhere. Some commands are available in both multiplayer and singleplayer, some require server admin permissions, and cheat-style commands are limited to singleplayer worlds after dev commands are enabled.
Player commands affect the person running them and can be used in singleplayer or on servers. These are useful for normal gameplay functions, such as sending private messages, checking information, or changing visibility options. They do not require full server control because they only affect your own session.
Admin commands are meant for server management. These include actions such as kicking or banning players, saving the world, or handling moderation tasks. On a dedicated Valheim server, you must be listed as an admin before these commands work.
If you host with HolyHosting, add your player ID to the server admin configuration through the control panel, then restart the server if the change does not apply immediately. Without admin access, the command may be typed correctly and still fail.
Cheat commands only work in singleplayer. To enable them, open the console and run:
```text devcommands ```
When enabled, the console should confirm that dev commands are active. After that, cheat commands such as flight, god mode, or no-cost building can be used in that singleplayer world. Run `devcommands` again to disable them.
These cheats do not work on dedicated multiplayer servers, including crossplay servers. That limitation is part of Valheim itself, not a hosting issue.
If the console does not open, the button combination was probably missed or released too early. While in-game, hold LT + RT + LB + RB + Options/Menu together until the console appears. After it has been enabled once, use Left Stick + Right Stick to toggle it.
If the console opens but you cannot type, press A to bring up the Xbox keyboard. This is required before entering commands.
If admin commands fail on a server, confirm that your player ID is in the admin list. Restarting the server can also help if the admin file was changed while the server was running.
If cheat commands fail in singleplayer, run `devcommands` first and check for the confirmation message. If you are connected to a multiplayer server, those commands will not activate.
