Five Essential Valheim Mods for a Better Server Experience

Valheim·March 10, 2021·8 min read

Valheim drops you into a mystical Norse afterlife with a hammer in hand and instructions that amount to "good luck." The base game is gorgeous, but anyone running a server for friends knows there are rough edges that mods can sand down nicely.

Below are five Valheim mods that consistently land on every must-install list, plus a quick note on what each one actually solves.

BetterUI

The Valheim engine handles forests and trolls beautifully, but the interface feels stripped down. BetterUI overhauls the HUD with practical upgrades: clearer item info, visible star ratings on gear, and XP bars for every skill.

If you have ever squinted at your inventory trying to remember which axe was the upgraded one, this fixes the problem in about five minutes.

Equipment and Quick Slots

Valheim asks you to carry tools, weapons, armor, food, building materials, and whatever loot you stumbled onto in the swamp. Inventory space disappears fast.

Equipment and Quick Slots adds three dedicated hotkey slots and gives every piece of worn gear its own inventory slot. You free up real estate for loot and can swap a bow for a shield without pausing the action.

Quick Stack

A surprising amount of Valheim playtime is spent shuffling items between chests. The base game has no auto-deposit or stack-to-container button, so you spend evenings clicking through storage boxes when you could be hunting Bonemass.

Quick Stack adds the one keybind every survival game should already include. It stacks matching items into nearby containers, pulls them back when you need them, and delivers the quality of life feature the base game never quite shipped.

Craft Build Smelt Cook Fuel Pull From Containers

The name reads like a stack trace, but the mod itself is gold. Pull From Containers lets you craft, build, smelt, cook, and refuel using materials sitting in nearby chests, with no manual transfers required.

For server admins, this is the difference between guests building a longhouse in one afternoon or quitting halfway through because they ran out of iron nails.

Valheim Plus

If you only install one mod from this list, make it Valheim Plus. It is the closest thing the game has to a full configuration suite.

Server owners can tune stamina regen, health regen, item stack sizes, smelter speeds, difficulty multipliers, and dozens of other values. Want a slightly harder world for veterans, or a softer landing for new friends? Valheim Plus exposes every dial.

It is also actively maintained, which matters when Valheim itself pushes a major update and other mods inevitably break.

Wrapping up

Modding a Valheim server takes about ten minutes once BepInEx is installed. These five cover the biggest gaps in the base experience: UI clarity, inventory pressure, container management, crafting friction, and overall customization. Grab one or grab them all, and your next Viking expedition will run a lot smoother.
