Modpacks are a huge part of why Minecraft Java has stayed relevant year after year. The community keeps shipping new flavors of the game: grim survival worlds, polished Vanilla+ adventures, kitchen-sink builds where you can do basically anything. Below are the ten modpacks that have racked up the most downloads on CurseForge, counted down from ten to one.
Released in 2021, Prominence II climbed the charts fast and earned its spot among the most downloaded modpacks ever. Calling it a modpack almost undersells what is in the box. You get a full quest-driven storyline, reworked combat, demanding boss fights, deep talent trees, and forgeable artifacts you can tune to your build. It still receives active updates, which is rare for a project this scoped, and traditional RPG fans will struggle to find anything closer to a proper standalone game inside Minecraft.

Dreams01 turned Minecraft into a dungeon-crawling loot grind. The pack leans hard into exploration across more than five dimensions, with weapons, armor, and magical items hooked into an RPG-style upgrade system. The sheer volume of content is the selling point, and most players will never see the bottom of it on a single save. There is also a sequel, Roguelike Adventures and Dungeons II for 1.16.5, if you somehow finish the original.

Not every modpack needs to reinvent the wheel. Better MC takes the base game and layers on the kind of biomes, mobs, structures, dimensions, and bosses you could imagine Mojang shipping a few updates from now. The restraint is the whole point. New players see a familiar Minecraft with extra texture, and that makes BMC1 a great entry point for anyone curious about modded play but not yet ready to drown in five hundred new mechanics on day one.
DawnCraft is the youngest entry on this list outside of an established series, and it earned the spot by building bespoke systems on top of Minecraft instead of just stacking mods. Souls-like combat, scripted boss fights, a complete quest line, and a faction reputation system anchor the experience. Around 200 hand-picked mods round out the worldbuilding with custom mobs, structures, and biomes. It is genuinely one of the more ambitious labors of love the modding scene has produced in years.

Getting friends to agree on a modpack is harder than slaying the Wither. ATM8 sidesteps that fight by including a bit of everything: magic, tech, dungeon exploration, automation, and more. Each player can specialize in what they actually enjoy, then mash all the systems together by the late game for results that border on absurd. The team behind it is also famously good at keeping the chaos stable, which matters when you are running hundreds of mods in the same JAR file.

Better MC shows up twice for good reason. LunaPixelStudios releases a fresh version for both Forge and Fabric whenever a major Minecraft update lands, swapping mods in and out while keeping the Vanilla+ identity intact. BMC4 covers the 1.20.1 era for Forge users, and the loadout has been tuned to feel cohesive rather than just stuffed. The newer Better MC 5 for NeoForge and 1.21.1 has not cracked the all-time top ten yet, but give it time.

Same philosophy as ATM8, new generation. ATM9 is the 1.20.1 entry in a series the ATMTeam has been releasing since Minecraft 1.10. The recipe stays consistent: keep what worked, add fresh mods, let players blend genres however they want. If you would rather grab the absolute latest, ATM10 is already available, with the team putting extra emphasis on stability so the bigger mod list does not collapse under its own weight.

The classic Sky Block premise, one tree and a tiny floating island in the void, gets a heavy industrial overhaul. SkyFactory 4 trades pure survival for a tech progression that lets you scale up from clinging to a stump, to automating resource pipelines, to actually conquering the dimensions including The End. It remains one of the most demanding modpacks for players who think they have already mastered modded Minecraft, and the void below is always waiting if you misclick.

Pixelmon was already one of the most popular Minecraft mods ever made, blending Pokémon mechanics with the survival sandbox. The official modpack builds on that foundation with extra content: themed biomes, structures, and items that fit the Pokémon universe. At the time of writing, every generation is in, mega evolutions and region-specific features included. For anyone who grew up wanting Pokémon and Minecraft to share the same save file, this is the closest you will get without writing your own engine.

RLCraft sits on top with more than 24 million downloads on CurseForge, a frankly absurd number for a community-made mod project. It is also one of the most punishing experiences in modded Minecraft. You manage thirst and temperature alongside hunger, you hide from creatures that can end a run in seconds, and any misstep can erase hours of progress. Stick with it though, and the level system, skills, and loot eventually flip the dynamic, turning the player into the hunter. New biomes, structures, bosses, and dimensions wait at the end of all that suffering. The only real question left is whether you can take down RLCraft's version of the Ender Dragon.
