How to Set Up a Sky Factory 2 Minecraft Server

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·15 min read

Sky Factory 2 Overview

Sky Factory 2 takes the classic Skyblock idea and bolts a full modded progression system onto it. Instead of mining underground, you begin with a tiny starting area, a tree, and a lot of empty sky. From there, automation, resource processing, and careful planning turn one lonely block into a working base.

The pack runs on Minecraft 1.7.10 and is maintained by Darkosto. It is built around a challenge book, so new players are not completely abandoned in the void. Mostly abandoned, sure, but with instructions.

Install Sky Factory 2 on the Server

  1. Open the HolyHosting server panel.
  2. Find the server version or jar selection area.
  3. Search for SkyFactory or scroll through the modpack list.
  4. Select Sky Factory 2, then apply the version change.

When prompted, generate a new world. Sky Factory 2 depends on a custom world setup, so reusing an old world can cause missing terrain, broken spawns, or other problems. Restart the server after changing the modpack.

Configure the Sky Factory 2 World

  1. Return to the HolyHosting server panel.
  2. Open the configuration files area.
  3. Choose the server settings file.
  4. Set the generator settings to `{"Topography-Preset":"Sky Factory 2"}`.

Make sure the level type remains set to `default`. Save the file, create a fresh world when asked, and restart the server so the new settings load correctly.

Install the Client Modpack

Players need the same modpack installed locally before joining the server.

  1. Download and install ATLauncher from the official ATLauncher website.
  2. Open the launcher and sign in.
  3. Go to Packs and search for Sky Factory.
  4. Select the Sky Factory 2 pack, create a new instance, choose the version, and install it.

After installation, open the Instances section and find the new Sky Factory 2 profile.

Press Play from that instance. Once Minecraft launches, add your server address and join as usual.

First Steps After Spawning

A new Sky Factory 2 world begins on top of an oak tree with a few starting books. The most important one is the Achievement Book, which acts as the pack's checklist and early-game guide.

Start by breaking the wooden logs. Turn the wood into planks, make a crafting table, and craft sticks. Use four sticks to create a crook, then break leaves with it to collect saplings and a silkworm.

Next, craft an oak barrel. Barrels let you compost saplings into dirt, and dirt means more trees, more space, and fewer awkward moments standing on a single block.

Use the silkworm on oak leaves to infest them. After roughly a minute and a half, the leaves will finish changing. Break the infested leaves with a crook to collect string.

Place string across a crafting table to make silk mesh. Then combine oak planks, sticks, and two silk mesh to craft a sieve.

Put dirt into the sieve and right-click it to gather stones. Craft those stones into cobblestone, then use the cobblestone to expand the island and unlock more crafting options.

From there, collect rainwater in an oak barrel and keep following the Achievement Book. It will lead through the rest of the pack's early automation and resource chain.

Common Problems

I cannot join the server. This usually means the client modpack is missing or does not match the server. Install the official Sky Factory 2 pack through ATLauncher and launch from that instance.

The server is stuck loading. This can happen if a mod was removed from an existing world. Open the server console and run `/fml confirm` to allow the world to load with the missing mods removed.

Modded items show in creative but do not work on the server. The server may not be running the Sky Factory 2 modpack correctly. Recheck the selected server version, save the change, and restart the server.

Final Notes

Sky Factory 2 is a strong pick for players who like Skyblock but want deeper progression, automation, and a more technical endgame. Once the server and client are both using the correct pack, the Achievement Book provides a clear path from tree punching to factory building.
