Minecraft already gives players a huge sandbox, but modpacks can turn that sandbox into a factory floor, magic academy, exploration challenge, or some very complicated machine that eats all your iron. Feed The Beast, usually shortened to FTB, is one of the best-known modpack teams in the Minecraft community. Packs such as Direwolf, SkyFactory, Infinity Evolved, and FTB Academy have helped shape modded Minecraft for years.
The FTB App is the easiest way to install and update modern Feed The Beast packs. It includes direct access to FTB modpacks, version selection, and pack-specific memory settings, which makes it simpler than manually assembling mods and hoping nothing explodes before the main menu loads.
This guide explains how to install the FTB App, add a modpack, launch it through Minecraft, and solve a couple of common startup problems.
Minecraft modpacks run on Java, so make sure Java is installed and up to date before starting. On Windows, search for About Java from the Start Menu to check your installed version.
If Java is missing or outdated, download the latest version from the official Java website. After installing Java, restart your computer before opening the FTB App. Skipping the restart can cause odd launcher behavior, which is never anyone's favorite part of modded Minecraft.
After a short wait, the FTB App should open and be ready for modpack installation.
If macOS blocks the app because of security settings, open System Settings or System Preferences, then go to Security & Privacy. Unlock the settings with your password if needed, then choose Open Anyway for FTBApp. The warning may appear once more, but this time it should include an Open button. After that, the app should launch normally.
Once the FTB App is installed, you can add a modpack from the Home screen or from Browse under the Modpacks tab.
The Minecraft Launcher will open. If this is your first time launching through the app, sign in with your Minecraft account. Click Play in the Minecraft Launcher, wait for the final setup steps to complete, and the modpack will start.
FTB packs usually apply a recommended memory amount automatically, but some larger packs may still need more RAM.
To adjust memory for a specific pack:
For example, if the pack is set to 4 GB and crashes during loading, try increasing it to 6 GB.
Do not assign too much memory. A good rule is to avoid giving Minecraft more than half of your system RAM. If your computer has 8 GB of RAM, keep the pack at 4 GB or lower unless you know exactly what else is running.
If the app says Issue connecting to backend... Please wait or relaunch when opened from the Windows taskbar, the pinned shortcut may have been created while the FTB App was already running.
To fix it:
Open the app from the newly pinned shortcut, and the backend connection error should stop appearing.
