Palworld stormed into Early Access on January 19, 2024 and turned the monster-catching corner of the genre upside down. Five months later, Pocketpair is about to drop its biggest expansion yet: the Sakurajima Update. New island, new Pals, new boss fights, a PVP arena, and a raised level cap are all on the menu.
Here is a rundown of what the patch brings, when to expect it, and what to start preparing for.
The Sakurajima Update arrives as a free patch on June 27, 2024. Content creators who want a head start can apply through the official channels and grab it a few days earlier via this form.
For a quick visual tour before the patch hits, the official trailer covers most of the highlights:

This patch was originally announced as the Summer Update, but Pocketpair rebranded it after its centerpiece: Sakurajima Island. The architecture and overall aesthetic lean heavily on classical Japanese design, with shrines, cherry blossom groves, and a graveyard that looks like it belongs in a horror movie rather than a sandbox game.
The studio has not confirmed the exact size of the island or how its biomes are distributed, but the trailer hints at multiple distinct regions. Each one is expected to host its own Pals, which means exploring every corner will actually matter for collectors.
Details on the full Pal roster are still light, but the trailer shows several new captures inspired by frogs, ostriches, and turkeys. Pocketpair is also adding subspecies of existing Pals, with a pink Chillet already confirmed. Reskins might sound minor on paper, but in a game built around team comps, even a recolor can change the meta when it ships with different stats or abilities.
Sakurajima introduces a brand new faction, complete with a leader who carries an exclusive Pal of their own. Expect a heavy fight: the boss is being teased as a serious step up from current encounters. Solo players might want to bring backup, and groups will probably get more out of it. Running a Palworld dedicated server for your squad is one of the cleaner ways to coordinate this kind of raid without dealing with peer-to-peer drop-outs.
Builders are getting some love too. The update relaxes several building restrictions, so players can place more structures and run more bases in parallel. Translation: more room to scale up ammo production, resource farms, and the kind of sprawling fortress layouts the community has been requesting since launch.
The industrial side of Palworld gets a major addition: a new stronghold built on an oil rig, guarded by a high-level poaching group. Pocketpair has flagged this as a "large scale battle" zone, which is dev-speak for "do not show up alone". Bring friends, bring gear, bring Pals you actually like.
The long-requested PVP arena is finally part of the patch. Each Pal Trainer can field up to three Pals at a time, so matches should get messy in the best way possible. It is also the first proper venue to settle which of your friends actually built the better team versus who just got luckier captures.
Pals are currently capped at level 50, and Sakurajima pushes that ceiling higher. The exact new cap has not been announced, but it ties directly into the patch's other endgame addition: a new raid boss. Specifics are still under wraps, but Pocketpair has been clear that you will want your strongest gear and your strongest Pals before challenging it.
If you have been waiting for a reason to come back to Palworld after the launch hype settled, this is it. Sakurajima is shaping up to be less of a content trickle and more of a proper expansion: new region, new enemies, new endgame, and a PVP mode that gives competitive players something to do once the catching is done.
Mark June 27 on the calendar, sharpen your Pals' moves, and consider lining up a server with your group before launch day so you are not all stuck in a queue when the island opens.
