Palworld Fishing Explained: Rods, Baits, and the Minigame for Water Pals

The Tides of Terraria update gave Palworld trainers a brand new way to expand their roster: fishing. Casting a line is now the only path to certain aquatic Pals like Jelliette and Jellroy, so if those creatures keep slipping past your Pal Spheres, this is the system you have been missing. Here is everything worth knowing before you grab a rod.

What You Need Before Casting a Line

Fishing is not just walking up to the nearest pond and tapping a button. You need a craftable rod, the right bait, and a viable patch of water. The recipes unlock through the Technology Tree, which means you also need enough EXP and Technology Points to climb the tiers. Extra rods exist as schematics scattered across the map for treasure hunters, but the three crafted tiers below are the reliable path most players take.

Fishing Rod Tiers

Three rods cover the crafting progression, each gated behind a Pal trainer milestone:

• Beginner Fishing Set (Chillet): 10x Paldium Fragment, 3x Pal Fluids, 8x Ingot, 8x Fiber
• Intermediate Fishing Rod (Cattiva): 30x Paldium Fragment, 10x High-Quality Pal Oil, 10x Cement, 30x Fiber
• Advanced Fishing Rod (Pengullet): 70x Paldium Fragment, 20x High-Quality Pal Oil, 15x Pal Metal Ingot, 30x Carbon Fiber

Higher tiers raise your odds of hooking stronger Pals, so do not feel bad about parking yourself in front of a workbench to grind ingredients.

Bait Recipes

Bait quality matters more than people expect. Cheap bait works on common Pals, while rarer Water Pals tend to ignore anything less than premium snacks:

• Simple Bait: 2x Pal Fluids, 4x Red Berries, 2x Flour
• High-Quality Bait: 3x Pal Fluids, 4x Tomato, 3x Flour
• Deluxe Bait: 4x High-Quality Pal Oil, 4x Onion, 3x Carrot, 4x Flour
• Alluring Bait: 10x High-Quality Pal Oil, 1x Cavern Mushroom, 3x Carrot, 5x Flour

If a specific Pal keeps refusing your line, upgrading the bait usually solves it faster than upgrading the rod.

Finding Pals Worth Fishing For

Once your gear is ready, head to any lake, river, or coastline and watch the surface. Look for Pals swimming in the water rather than gliding above it. Flying species like Celaray cannot be hooked, you still catch those the old fashioned way by throwing a Pal Sphere.

Equip the rod, then scroll the mouse wheel to pick a bait (default PC controls). Move your crosshair over the patch of water you want to target. It turns a soft bluish-green when the spot is valid. If it stays neutral, the cast is blocked, which is the game telling you that empty water yields empty results.

The Fishing Minigame Step by Step

Fire the line with the left mouse button and wait. When two exclamation marks (!!) flash above your character, a Pal has taken the hook. Click again immediately to start the minigame. Hesitate too long and the Pal swims off with your bait, which tends to sting more than the lost crafting materials.

The minigame is a tug of war with a moving bar:

• Press and hold the left mouse button to push the bar left.
• Release it and the bar drifts back to the right.

Your goal is to keep the bar overlapping the fish marker until the gauge at the top fills. Short taps usually work better than mashing the button. Find a rhythm and the gauge climbs steadily.

Fishing in Deep Water

You are not stuck on the shoreline. Mount a Water Pal like Surfent, Azurobe, or Jormuntide and you can cast from open ocean tiles that are unreachable on foot. That opens up a wider pool of catches, including some of the rarer Water types that arrived with the patch.
