OptiFine 1.21 Status: Official Release Delay and Unofficial OptiKai Build

Minecraft·August 9, 2024·7 min read

OptiFine has long been one of Minecraft's go-to options for performance tweaks and shader support. When a new Minecraft version arrives before OptiFine catches up, players are left deciding whether to wait or try a temporary workaround.

OptiFine 1.21 Release Status

The official OptiFine 1.21 update was reported by the developer as roughly 70% complete. Since then, delays have been mentioned due to unexpected issues and real-life obligations.

That means there is no finished official OptiFine 1.21 release covered by the source. Players who rely on OptiFine can either wait for the official build or use the temporary unofficial option described below.

Unofficial OptiFine 1.21 Update

LoudIris created an unofficial temporary build, with the OptiFine developer's blessing, called OptiKai. It can be downloaded here.

This build is not a full replacement for the finished official release. Some normal OptiFine features are missing, and bugs are present. The source specifically notes that shaders do not work at all, which is a fairly important detail for a tool many players install for shaders.

Installation Instructions

LoudIris shared different installation paths depending on the launcher or mod loader being used.

Standard

  1. Install Java JDK from Adoptium.
  2. Open the Minecraft launcher, launch Minecraft version 1.21, then close the launcher if it is still open.
  3. Open the downloaded OptiKai installer and press Install.
  4. Reopen the Minecraft launcher and start the profile with the OptiFine logo.

MultiMC

  1. Open the OptiKai installer and press extract, then JarMod.
  2. Create a new instance and choose Add to Minecraft.jar under the version tab.
  3. Select the jarmod.

Forge or NeoForge

  1. Install Forge 51.0.25.
  2. Drag the OptiKai installer into the mods folder.
  3. Launch with Forge.

Should You Use It?

The unofficial OptiKai build is best treated as a stopgap for players who need an OptiFine-like option on Minecraft 1.21 before the official release arrives. If missing features or broken shaders are dealbreakers, waiting for the completed OptiFine update is the safer choice.
