Modded Minecraft Servers and Modpacks: A Beginner Setup Guide

Minecraft·January 4, 2022·13 min read

Minecraft Java Edition mods can turn the game into nearly anything: dinosaur survival, space exploration, new tech systems, magic, extra dimensions, or something that feels only loosely related to chopping a tree on day one. For new server owners, the hard part is knowing where to start.

What Makes Modded Servers Different

Mods change Minecraft's files and behavior. Because of that, a modded server is effectively running a modified version of the game rather than standard vanilla Minecraft.

To connect, the player's Minecraft client must use the same modded setup as the server. The same mods need to be installed on the computer joining the server, and those mods usually need to be the same versions too. If the client and server files do not match, the connection usually fails with a missing mod, mismatched version, or generic disconnect message.

Modpacks also need more RAM because they add content, systems, mobs, blocks, and background processes. The more a pack adds, the heavier it becomes for both the client and server.

RAM requirements vary by modpack, but 4GB of RAM is a reasonable minimum starting point. Using less can cause lag or prevent the server from starting.

Choosing a Modded Launcher

A launcher makes modpack installation much easier by handling downloads and setup. Instead of manually tracking every dependency, players can install a full pack and launch it from one place. These are common options:

CurseForge

CurseForge hosts many of the most widely used modpacks and is usually the default choice. Its interface is beginner-friendly, and it has a strong chance of supporting the pack a player wants.

FTB App

The FTB App includes exclusive modpacks created and maintained by the Feed The Beast team. These packs are often polished because they have dedicated development behind them. CurseForge modpacks can also be installed and managed through the FTB App.

Technic

Technic hosts user-submitted modpacks plus exclusive options. Its exclusive packs tend to offer smoother setup because they are managed by a dedicated team.

ATLauncher

ATLauncher supports third-party modpacks and can install packs associated with other launchers. It is a useful fallback if another launcher causes technical problems.

VoidLauncher

VoidLauncher includes a few exclusive modpacks, though many are older by current standards. Players looking for CrazyCraft commonly use this launcher.

GDLauncher

GDLauncher does not host its own modpacks, but it can run modpacks from other sources. It focuses on a simple user experience and can be a good alternative when another launcher misbehaves.

Installing a Modpack Locally

After choosing and installing a launcher, use it to install the modpack and test it in singleplayer. This helps confirm the client works before adding server troubleshooting to the pile. If the pack crashes before the main menu, fix the local install first. A server cannot solve a broken client install, no matter how sternly it is restarted.

Modpacks use the computer's RAM. If too little memory is allocated, the game may lag in singleplayer and on servers. The exact steps for increasing allocated RAM depend on the launcher.

For CurseForge:

  1. Open the CurseForge client.
  2. Click the gear icon in the bottom-left corner.
  3. Click Minecraft.
  4. Under Java Settings, adjust the memory slider.

Do not allocate more RAM than the computer physically has. Check the system specs first.

Creating a Modded Minecraft Server

A private server can be hosted from home for free, but paid hosting is often easier and more stable, especially with modpacks. Modded Minecraft can be demanding, so server performance and available RAM matter.

Many packs need more than the 4GB baseline. Some require 5GB, 6GB, or 8GB at minimum. Check the modpack's official page for its recommended server requirements before choosing a plan.

Installing the Modpack on the Server

Server installation steps vary by host. With HolyHosting, eligible Budget Servers with Advanced Support and Premium Servers include one-click modpack installs through the Multicraft panel. Manual installs usually require uploading the correct server files, selecting the matching server jar or loader, accepting required configuration files, and restarting after setup.

Once the server starts successfully, connect with the matching modded client. The key rule remains the same: client and server files must match.

If Setup Still Fails

Modded Minecraft setup can be frustrating because a single mismatched mod version can block the entire connection. Check the client mod list, server mod list, Minecraft version, Forge or Fabric version, and RAM allocation before assuming the server is cursed.

When those basics line up, modpacks open the door to some of the most creative Minecraft experiences available.
