How to Install and Use Tinkers' Tool Leveling in Minecraft

What Tinkers' Tool Leveling Adds

Tools carry most of the progress in Minecraft. Pickaxes open up better ores, axes clear space, and weapons keep the local skeleton population humble. Tinkers' Construct already expands that system with custom tools, materials, and modifiers. Tinkers' Tool Leveling builds on it by giving those tools their own experience progression.

With this addon installed, Tinkers' Construct tools gain XP when they are used for their normal job. A pickaxe levels through mining, a sword levels through combat, and so on. When a tool levels up, it earns a free modifier slot. The catch is simple: each new level takes more work than the last.

Mod Details

Tinkers' Tool Leveling is a CurseForge addon by bonusboni for Tinkers' Construct, often shortened to TC. It supports Minecraft versions from 1.10.2 through 1.12.2 and has become a common pick for older Forge modded servers.

The mod requires three files to work properly:

  • Tinkers' Tool Leveling
  • Tinkers' Construct
  • Mantle

All three should match the same Minecraft and Forge version. Mixing versions is a reliable way to make the game complain before you even reach the title screen.

Downloading the Files

  1. Open the Tinkers' Tool Leveling page on CurseForge.
  2. Select Files near the top of the page to view available releases.
  1. Choose the version that matches your Minecraft Forge setup, then use the download button on the right.
  1. Save the `.jar` file somewhere easy to find.
  2. Download matching versions of Mantle and Tinkers' Construct as well.

Once all three `.jar` files are ready, you can install them on the server and your own Minecraft client.

Server Installation

  1. Open your server control panel and stop the server.
  2. Check the game version or server type section and confirm the server is using the matching Forge version.
  1. Open the server file manager or FTP access.
  2. Find the `mods` folder. If it does not exist, create it with that exact name.
  1. Upload Tinkers' Tool Leveling, Tinkers' Construct, and Mantle into the `mods` folder.
  2. Wait for the uploads to finish completely.
  3. Return to the main server page and start the server again.

Client Installation

Every player connecting to the server must also install the same mods locally. Server-side only magic does not apply here.

  1. Install Minecraft Forge for the same version used by the server.
  2. Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to Installations.
  1. Hover over the Forge profile and click the folder icon.
  2. In the opened Minecraft directory, find or create the `mods` folder.
  3. Place all three `.jar` files into that folder.
  1. Return to the launcher and start Minecraft with the Forge profile.

Using Leveled Tools

After joining a world or server, create a Tinkers' Construct tool or weapon as normal. The tool will begin earning XP whenever it is used for its intended purpose. Hovering over the item shows its current XP and the amount required for the next level.

When the XP bar fills, a message appears to show that the tool gained a level. Most tools start with a default requirement around 500 XP, though the exact value can vary by tool type or configuration. Each level doubles the next requirement, so early upgrades arrive quickly while later ones take more commitment.

Every level grants one free modifier, letting you improve the tool without relying only on the standard modifier limits. This makes long-term tools feel more valuable, especially on survival servers where players keep favorite weapons and mining tools for a long time.

Troubleshooting

Connection errors: If you cannot join the server, check the error message for missing mod names. The client must have the same required mods as the server. Also confirm that Minecraft is launching through the correct Forge profile. From the main menu, the Mods button should show Tinkers' Tool Leveling, Tinkers' Construct, and Mantle.

The mod fails during startup: Startup crashes often point to a missing dependency or version mismatch. Make sure Mantle and Tinkers' Construct are installed alongside Tinkers' Tool Leveling on both the server and client. All files should target the same Minecraft version.

Modded items are missing on the server: Test the same files in a singleplayer Forge world. If they work there, the server installation is likely the issue. Recheck that the server is running Forge, confirm the `.jar` files are inside the `mods` folder, then restart the server.
