Shields are among the most useful defensive items in Minecraft, especially when arrows, skeletons, or PVP opponents decide your day is going too well. Here is how to craft one, customize it with a banner, and add the best enchantments.

A shield is crafted at a crafting table using six wooden planks and one iron ingot. Place one plank in the top-left slot, the iron ingot in the top-middle slot, and another plank in the top-right slot. Fill all three slots in the middle row with planks, then place the final plank in the bottom-middle slot.
Once crafted, the shield can be equipped and used to block many incoming attacks, making it a cheap but powerful tool for survival and combat.

To place a banner on a shield, put the shield and banner together in a crafting table, with the banner to the right of the shield. If banners are new to you, they are crafted from six wool blocks and one stick, then decorated with patterns using a loom. The Minecraft banner page covers the item in more detail.
A banner is consumed when it is added to a shield. If the design matters, copy it first by placing the decorated banner beside a blank banner in a crafting table. That lets you reuse the same pattern for multiple shields or matching decorations.
As of Minecraft 1.21.4, shields only support two enchantments. Unbreaking III increases durability so the shield lasts longer, while Mending I repairs it automatically using collected experience.
Shields can not be enchanted directly through an enchanting table. Instead, get an Unbreaking III book and a Mending book, then apply them to the shield with an anvil.
