When opening a Minecraft server, the last thing anyone wants is to encounter a console error that prevents the server from running properly.
Unfortunately, this can happen quite often with various different errors.
One of the less common errors you may encounter is the failed to bind to port error. This Minecraft server error occurs when a server tries to use a service port (i.e., 25565) that is already being used by another server. Since most Minecraft hosting services are shared hosting with shared IP addresses, the only way to make each server accessible is by giving it a unique port.
Failed to Bind to Port
**** FAILED TO BIND PORT! The exception was: java.net.BindException: Address already in use Perhaps a server is already running on that port?
Perhaps a server is already running on that port?
Above are the messages you will see if you encounter this error. The server will not be able to fully start and no one will be able to connect.
How to Fix the Failed to Bind to Port Error
If you don't have a server with Holy Hosting, you'll need to configure the server to use a port that is open and not being used by any other service.
However, if you're using shared hosting, you'll need to contact the hosting support team and mention that your server is encountering a "Failed to Bind" error and they will resolve it.
Conclusion
Since multiple Minecraft servers can be hosted using the same IP, they need to be assigned a unique service port to distinguish themselves from the other hosted servers. As such, Minecraft servers using Shared Hosting are usually given a unique service port above the default server port (25565) and incremented incrementally for each server (25566, 25567, etc.). If you're experiencing this issue while using a hosting server, make sure to contact the support team so they can resolve it as soon as possible.
