Minecraft Pig Variants Explained for 2025

Minecraft·January 9, 2025·6 min read

Pigs have been wandering Minecraft since Java Edition Classic, yet the mob stayed mostly unchanged for years. That changes in 2025 with new biome-based pig variants. The classic pink pig is still here, but it now shares the pen with cold and warm versions, plus one accidental piece of Minecraft history: the failed pig that helped create the creeper.

All Minecraft Pig Variants in 2025

Cold Pig

Cold pigs have cream-colored fur and appear in colder or rougher overworld biomes. Their spawn list includes old-growth pine taiga, old-growth spruce taiga, taiga, snowy taiga, windswept hills, windswept gravelly hills, and windswept forest biomes.

Mojang has not confirmed the inspiration, but the design appears similar to the Mangalica, a Hungarian pig breed often nicknamed the sheep pig because of its woolly coat. Minecraft finally gave pigs winter fashion, which is fair considering how long sheep had the spotlight.

Warm Pig

Warm pigs use a rust-brown coat and spawn in hotter regions. Look for them in savanna, savanna plateau, windswept savanna, jungle, sparse jungle, bamboo jungle, eroded badlands, wooded badlands, and badlands biomes.

Their look is likely influenced by wild pigs or Eurasian boars, which commonly have light brown coats and small tusks. That inspiration is not confirmed, but the visual connection is easy to see.

Temperate Pig

Temperate pigs are the familiar Minecraft pigs with peach-colored skin. As of Minecraft Snapshot 25w02a, they spawn in forest, flower forest, birch forest, old-growth birch forest, dark forest, and swamp biomes.

This version is probably based on domestic pig breeds such as the Large White or the American Yorkshire. Their sparse, pale hair can make the skin underneath appear peach, matching the classic Minecraft look.

Failed Pig

The final variant is not a normal mob variant at all, but it is too important to leave out. While Notch was creating the pig model, a bug distorted the shape into what became the creeper. Notch found the mistake creepy enough to keep the idea for a hostile creature.

That accident eventually became Minecraft's most recognizable monster. Not bad for a pig model that went sideways in every possible way.
