Minecraft·September 4, 2024·6 min read

The first trailer for A Minecraft Movie finally gave fans a proper look at the mobs, the Overworld, and the live-action cast that had been rumored for months. It also gave everyone plenty to argue about, because Minecraft fans are nothing if not efficient.

When A Minecraft Movie Releases

A Minecraft Movie is scheduled to arrive in North American theaters and IMAX on April 5, 2025. International rollout begins earlier, on April 2, 2025, though the exact date depends on the region.

Spoiler warning: The synopsis below summarizes the official premise from Minecraft.net, so skip ahead if only cast details are needed.

The film follows four outsiders: Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn. Their ordinary-world problems get interrupted when they are pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a cubic place where imagination is not just helpful, but necessary for survival.

To return home, the group has to understand the rules of Minecraft, survive threats such as Piglins and Zombies, and work with Steve, an experienced crafter. The adventure pushes the characters to rediscover the creative traits they need both in the Overworld and back in real life.

Confirmed Cast

The movie is directed by Oscar nominee Jared Hess. The announced cast includes Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Emma Myers, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.

That may not be the final full cast list. Earlier leaks suggested that more names could appear, but those additions were not confirmed in the source material.

Early Fan Response

Initial reactions across X, Reddit, and YouTube have been mixed. Many fans seem cautious rather than fully negative, with plenty saying they will still watch the movie even if expectations are low.

A common reaction is that Minecraft may have been better suited to animation, similar to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The live-action mob designs also received a rougher response from parts of the community.

For now, the first look has left fans hesitant but curious. The property is beloved enough that many players still appear willing to give the movie a chance.
