Minecraft Mob Vote History: Every Winner and Nominee

Minecraft·November 15, 2025·16 min read

Minecraft's voting tradition began in 2017 with four possible mobs. Since then, every winner has entered the game while the losing ideas have gathered a fanbase of their own. Some even escaped into other Minecraft projects, which is better than vanishing into concept-art limbo.

2017 Mob Vote

Mob A: The Barnacle

The Barnacle, shown in the top-right of the image, was planned as an ocean hostile mob. It would have pulled players downward underwater, similar to the bubble-column effect created by magma blocks today.

[Winner] Mob B: Phantom

Phantoms were added in Minecraft 1.13. They are flying hostile mobs that appear in the Overworld and attack players who have not slept for three in-game days.

Mob C: The Great Hunger

The Great Hunger, shown in the lower-left of the image, would have sunk into the ground and eaten mobs or items that passed over its mouth. Jeb also said it would have helped players add and remove enchantments from items.

Mob D: The Wildfire

The Wildfire, shown in the lower-right, was designed to appear with groups of blazes and block attacks with shields. After losing, it later appeared in Minecraft Dungeons.

2018 Biome Chooser

Desert: Meerkats

If the desert had won, Mojang planned to add oases, palm trees, and meerkats.

[Winner] Taiga: Foxes

The taiga update won, bringing foxes, berry bushes, and campfires to the game in Minecraft 1.14.

Savanna: Termites and Ostriches

The savanna proposal included baobab trees, termites, and ostriches.

2018 China Edition Mob Vote

Before Minecraft Live 2018, Minecraft China Edition held its own mob vote. The choices were:

  • [Winner] Panda
  • Crocodile
  • Golden Monkey
  • Deer
  • Pink Dolphin

2018 Cat Vote

Minecraft also ran a 2018 Twitter vote to choose a new cat appearance. Jellie, the cat owned by GoodTimesWithScar, won and was added to the game.

2019 Biome Vote

Badlands: Vultures

A badlands victory would have added tumbleweeds, vultures, and a new flowering cactus.

Swamp: Frogs

Swamp features later arrived in Minecraft 1.19. Frogs, mangrove trees, and boats with chests were added to the game.

[Winner] Mountains: Goats

Mountains won the 2019 vote. Powdered snow, goats, and broader mountain and snow updates arrived beginning with Minecraft 1.17.

2020 Mob Vote

Moobloom

The Moobloom came from Minecraft Earth and would have acted like a flower-covered cow variant, similar in concept to mooshrooms.

Iceologer

The Iceologer originated in Minecraft Dungeons. It was planned as a mountain-spawning pillager variant that attacked players with ice clouds.

[Winner] Glow Squid

The Glow Squid, also from Minecraft Earth, entered the game in Minecraft 1.17. It is a glowing squid variant that drops glow ink sacs.

2021 Mob Vote

Glare

The Glare, shown on the left, would have warned players when an area was dark enough for hostile mobs to spawn.

[Winner] Allay

The Allay arrived in Minecraft 1.19. It can be found trapped in cages and woodland manors. After being given an item, it follows the player and collects matching items nearby.

Copper Golem

The Copper Golem appears in Minecraft 1.21.9 and is built with a copper block and carved pumpkin. The original vote pitch described a small robot that pushed copper buttons, but the released version sorts items from copper chests into regular chests.

2022 Mob Vote

[Winner] Sniffer

The Sniffer was added in Minecraft 1.20. Players find its eggs in underwater ruins, then hatch them so the mob can sniff out ancient seeds and flowers.

Rascal

The Rascal, shown in the center, would have spawned underground and run when players spotted it. Catching it three times would have rewarded the player with a gift.

Tuff Golem

The Tuff Golem, shown on the right, would have displayed items like an item frame and occasionally walked around.

2023 Mob Vote

Crab

The crab was designed for mangrove swamps. It would have dropped claws, which could be crafted into a crab claw for placing and breaking blocks from farther away.

[Winner] Armadillo

Armadillos entered Minecraft 1.21.5. They spawn in badlands biomes and drop armadillo scute when brushed. Armadillo scute is used to craft wolf armor.

Penguin

The penguin, shown on the right, would have spawned on stony cliffs and increased the speed of players in nearby boats.

What Happens to Losing Mobs?

Losing mobs are not always gone forever. The biome vote showed that rejected concepts can still appear later, and the Wildfire moved into Minecraft Dungeons. A future vote made only of runners-up would probably be chaos, but at least it would be familiar chaos.
