Crafting is part of nearly every Minecraft session, but it gets much harder to track once mods start adding new blocks, tools, machines, foods, and materials. Searching the web for every recipe works for about five minutes, then it becomes a second job.
Just Enough Items, usually shortened to JEI, solves that problem by adding an in-game item and recipe viewer. It works with vanilla Minecraft and many modded items, letting players search materials, inspect crafting recipes, check item uses, and bookmark important components. This makes it especially helpful on modded servers where one machine recipe may require six parts you have never seen before.
JEI must be installed on the Minecraft client. Installing it on the server is optional in many setups, but it is still recommended when you want better compatibility and server-side control over features such as cheat mode.

Just Enough Items has been around since 2015 and is one of the standard tools included in large modpacks. Forge versions cover a wide range of Minecraft releases, while Fabric support depends on the available JEI build for your version. It is common to see JEI bundled with packs like Better Minecraft, Valhelsia, and other recipe-heavy modded setups.

When you open your inventory in Survival or Creative mode, JEI displays a searchable item list along the side of the screen. This list includes available vanilla items and, when supported, items from your installed mods.
The page controls at the top let you move through the full catalog. In a small setup this is manageable, but in a large modpack the list can stretch across hundreds of pages. It is useful for checking whether a mod loaded correctly, seeing what items exist, or reminding yourself which block was called what, because modded Minecraft loves naming three different things almost the same way.

The search bar in the bottom right is usually faster than browsing pages manually. Type part of an item name, such as `Nether`, and JEI filters the visible list to matching items. This also works for many modded items, blocks, and materials.
The tool icon beside the search field opens configuration options when the required configuration support is installed. Some settings may require the Configured mod, depending on your version and loader.
Recipe lookup is JEI's main feature. Hover over a craftable item in the item list or inventory, then press `R` to view its recipe. This works for standard crafting recipes and many supported modded crafting systems.
Not every item has a recipe. A dirt block, for example, will not show a crafting recipe because it is normally gathered rather than crafted. Modded items, such as gadgets, machine parts, or special tools, often do show recipes when their mod includes JEI support.

If an item has multiple recipes, use the arrows in the recipe window to cycle through them. This is common for items like potions or materials that can be made through several crafting paths.

Press `U` while hovering over an item to see what it can be used for. Depending on the item, JEI may show crafting uses, enchantments, smelting results, blasting, fuel value, stonecutting, or other supported recipe categories.
This is helpful when you find a new item and do not know whether it is important, decorative, or just another ingredient standing between you and the machine you actually wanted to build.

Bookmarks let you keep important items visible without searching for them repeatedly. Hover over an item and press `A` to add it to the bookmark area in the top left of the screen. Press `A` again on the same item to remove it.
There is no practical limit for normal use, so you can bookmark every part needed for a complicated recipe chain. This is especially useful in modpacks where crafting one final item may require several intermediate components.

JEI can also allow players to take items directly from the item list, but this depends on the world's settings and server configuration. On a server, these options are usually managed in the `serverconfig` directory inside the `jei-server.toml` file.
Cheat mode can be limited to server operators, Creative mode players, or users who already have access to commands such as `/give`. When enabled, left-clicking an item in the JEI list gives a full stack, while right-clicking gives one item. Players with the proper permissions can also delete inventory items by dragging them into the JEI item list.
This is mainly useful for admins, builders, and test worlds. On a survival server, leaving it open to everyone is a fast way to turn progression into a decorative suggestion.
JEI is popular enough that many other mods build on top of it. Addons can add missing recipe handlers, extra information panels, or better integration with specific modded systems.
Common examples include:
Just Enough Items is one of the simplest ways to make modded Minecraft easier to understand. Players can search items, inspect recipes, check uses, and track complicated crafting chains without leaving the game every few minutes.
For servers, JEI is especially useful when new players are joining a modpack for the first time. Pair it with relevant addons when your pack needs extra recipe support, and review cheat mode settings before opening the server to everyone.
