Minecraft updates usually affect the world after players press play. This time, the trouble started before that point. Mojang's newer Minecraft Java Edition launcher arrived with a cleaner look, but some players quickly ran into login problems and offline play restrictions.
Mojang released a redesigned launcher for Minecraft Java Edition earlier in the week covered by the source article. The launcher introduced a more modern interface and brought Java Edition together with Minecraft for Windows and Minecraft Dungeons.
The visual refresh was not the issue. The problems appeared when players tried to sign in, deal with account migration, or launch Java Edition without an internet connection.

Some players struggled to log in after downloading the new launcher, especially while adjusting to the account migration process. That alone would be frustrating, but the bigger concern involved offline play.
Players reported that the new launcher no longer allowed Minecraft Java Edition to launch offline. Instead, they saw the message: “Oh no! Something went wrong, and we couldn’t connect to the Minecraft services. Try again.”
For players used to opening local worlds without a connection, that felt like an unwanted restriction. It also created a practical problem: if the launcher could not reach Minecraft services, some players could not access their own worlds.

Players affected by the new launcher had a few workarounds available, though none were perfect.
One option for players without migrated Minecraft accounts was to keep using the old launcher by setting it to Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility mode. That could allow the older launcher to work as it had before, but the method depended on Mojang continuing to support it.
Another approach was using a third-party launcher such as MultiMC, a popular option in the Java Edition community. That route can help some players avoid the new launcher problems, but it also means trusting and managing software outside the official launcher.

At the time of the source article, Mojang had not yet responded to the launcher issues players were reporting. It was also unclear whether the offline restriction was intentional or an unintended side effect.
Either way, the reaction was negative because the launcher was stopping some players from getting into Minecraft at all. With Caves and Cliffs Part 2, Minecraft 1.18, expected on December 3rd in that coverage window, the timing made the launcher problems more urgent. A major update launch is already chaotic enough without the front door sticking.
