How to Install and Use Illager Invasion in Minecraft

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·34 min read

Overview

Illagers already make Minecraft villages, outposts, raids, and woodland mansions more dangerous. For some players, though, the vanilla version starts to feel a little too predictable. The Illager Invasion mod expands that idea with new illager enemies, custom structures, extra loot, a boss fight, and an imbuing system for upgrading enchanted gear beyond normal limits.

The mod works with Forge and Fabric, depending on the Minecraft version you choose. It keeps the game close to vanilla while adding more reasons to explore and more reasons to bring decent armor before walking into suspicious buildings. Walking in with a stone sword is technically possible, but so is learning the hard way.

This guide explains how to download Illager Invasion, install it on your client and server, use its main features, adjust its configuration, and fix common setup issues.

Downloading Illager Invasion

Start by downloading the mod file that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader.

  • Open the Illager Invasion page on CurseForge and select Files.
  • Find the file for the Minecraft version and loader you plan to use.
  • Open the menu with the three dots, then choose Download File.
  • Save the file somewhere easy to find, such as your desktop or downloads folder.
  • Download Puzzles Lib as well, since it is required.
  • If you are using Fabric, also download Fabric API and Forge Config API Port.

Make sure every dependency matches the same Minecraft version as Illager Invasion. Mixed versions are one of the fastest ways to make the game refuse to launch.

Installing the Mod on Your Client

Before adding the mod files, install either Forge or Fabric in your Minecraft Launcher. Use the same game version that you selected when downloading Illager Invasion and its dependencies.

  • Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Installations.
  • Find your Forge or Fabric profile, then click the folder icon.
  • In the folder that opens, locate the `mods` directory.
  • If there is no `mods` folder, create one with that exact name.
  • Drag Illager Invasion and all required dependency files into the `mods` folder.
  • Return to the launcher and start Minecraft with the modded profile.

If Minecraft opens normally and the mod appears in the mods list, the client side is ready.

Installing Illager Invasion on a Server

A server also needs Forge or Fabric installed before the mod can run. From your server panel, choose the matching server software and Minecraft version, then restart once so the required folders generate.

After that, upload the mod files.

  • Open your server panel and go to the file manager or FTP client.
  • Log in with your server panel or FTP credentials.
  • Open the `mods` directory.
  • Upload Illager Invasion and the same dependency files used on the client.
  • Wait until every upload reaches 100 percent.
  • Generate a new world if you want the new structures to appear immediately.
  • Restart the server when finished.

All players joining the server must have the same mod loader, Minecraft version, Illager Invasion file, and required dependencies installed locally.

First Steps In-Game

Once the mod is active, new structures may appear while exploring. Most of them are guarded by illagers, so prepare before rushing in. Basic armor, food, shields, ranged weapons, and backup gear are worth bringing.

For easier recipe checking, install JEI or a similar item viewer. It helps with the mod's custom items and the imbuing table recipe. Server operators can also use `/locate` to find new structures faster when testing the mod.

Creative mode is useful for learning what the mod adds, but survival is where its new enemies and loot loop make the most sense.

New Illager Mobs

Illager Invasion adds 11 illager-style mobs. Some are direct threats, such as spellcasters and fire-based enemies, while others behave differently from normal hostile mobs.

One notable example is an older illager found near firecaller huts. Unlike most illagers, this one does not immediately attack. Getting too close can still provoke a defensive response, so treat the encounter carefully. The mod may add nuance, but it does not turn illagers into friendly neighbors with a gift basket.

The strongest new enemy is the Invoker boss, covered later in this guide.

Structures to Explore

Illager Invasion adds several structures where the new mobs appear. These buildings are the main way players encounter the mod's enemies and loot.

Forts are one of the more common structures. They usually contain several buildings, outdoor training spaces, standard illagers, and modded enemies. After clearing the area, players can search chests for useful supplies and custom materials.

Large towers are more dangerous. They include multiple floors, rooms, and stronger enemies such as illusioners that create clones during combat. Archivist-style enemies may also appear and use magic attacks, making these towers risky without proper gear.

Firecaller huts are quieter locations, but they are not completely harmless. The older illager found there may ignore players at first, then summon fireballs if threatened or crowded. You can leave them alone, or defeat them for valuable drops if your conscience and armor can handle it.

Loot and Custom Materials

New structure chests can contain familiar Minecraft loot such as arrows, berries, bread, golden apples, enchanted books, sticks, emeralds, and other supplies. Some chests also include custom materials used in Illager Invasion recipes.

Unusual dust and illusionary dust are examples of these special materials. With enough resources, players can craft hallowed gems, which are needed for the enchantment upgrade system. Other materials, such as platinum chunks and magical fire charges, may drop from certain illager mobs.

Because loot can vary by structure and version, JEI is helpful for checking what each item does instead of guessing through trial, error, and a suspicious number of explosions.

Imbuing Table

The imbuing table is the main interactive block added by Illager Invasion. It allows players to upgrade enchanted gear beyond normal vanilla limits. For example, an enchantment such as Sharpness can go higher than level five if the required materials are available.

To use the imbuing system, you generally need hallowed gems and matching enchanted books. The requirements depend on the item and enchantment, so check the recipe viewer when planning upgrades.

Crafting the imbuing table requires a special drop from the Invoker boss. That means the mod's best upgrade feature is locked behind one of its toughest fights.

Invoker Boss Fight

The Invoker is a powerful illager boss found in woodland mansions, usually near the upper sections of the structure. Woodland mansions are already rare, so finding the fight may take some searching unless commands are enabled.

During combat, the Invoker can summon extra creatures, cause explosions, apply knockback, and teleport when pressured or cornered. The fight is much harder than normal illager encounters, so bring strong armor, healing items, ranged options, and enough food.

Defeating the Invoker gives access to the key item needed for the imbuing table. It is a high-risk fight, but the reward matters for long-term progression.

Configuring the Mod

Server owners can adjust Illager Invasion through its configuration file. Most options focus on raids, such as deciding which custom illagers can appear. Other settings may control general behavior, including whether the Invoker boss bar appears in-game.

  • Open the server file manager or FTP area and log in.
  • Enter the `config` directory.
  • Find `illagerinvasion-server.toml` and open it with the editor.
  • Change the settings you want to adjust.
  • Save the file.
  • Restart the server so the edits apply.

Depending on the loader or mod version, the config may instead appear under `.../[world]/serverconfig`. Singleplayer worlds use the same general idea, with config files stored in either the main config folder or the world's serverconfig folder.

Always stop the server or close the game before editing if changes do not save properly.

Common Problems

Minecraft Will Not Launch or Players Cannot Join

This usually means the mod files, dependencies, loader, or Minecraft version do not match. Confirm that Forge or Fabric is installed correctly, then check that Illager Invasion and every dependency are built for the same game version.

Fabric setups require Illager Invasion, Puzzles Lib, Fabric API, and Forge Config API Port. Servers also need the same mod files uploaded to the `mods` folder. If one side has a missing or mismatched file, joining will fail.

New Structures Are Missing

New structures only generate in chunks that are created after the mod is installed. If you add Illager Invasion to an existing world, old explored areas will not suddenly gain forts, towers, or huts.

To fix this, create a new world or travel into unexplored chunks. Generating a fresh server world is the cleanest option when you want the mod's content to appear quickly.

Config Changes Do Not Apply

After editing `illagerinvasion-server.toml`, make sure the file was saved and the server was restarted. Also check for formatting mistakes, missing characters, or invalid values in the TOML file.

For singleplayer, close Minecraft before changing the config, then reopen the game. If the file keeps reverting, edit it while the world or server is fully stopped.
