Horse Expert Mod: Reveal Horse and Llama Stats in Minecraft

Minecraft·May 20, 2026·19 min read

Overview

Breeding the perfect horse in Minecraft is mostly a guessing game. Two animals can look identical, yet one will outrun the other and clear taller fences without breaking a sweat. The Horse Expert mod removes the guesswork by showing the full stat sheet of any tamed horse or llama right on your screen. It works for llamas too, which is handy if you run caravans. Whether you are scouting wild herds or managing a breeding pen with friends, this small tool earns its keep fast.

Below is a complete walkthrough for installing Horse Expert on a Minecraft server hosted with HolyHosting, plus a quick guide to using it once you load in.

Downloading the Mod and Its Dependencies

Start with the mod itself.

  • Open the Horse Expert page on CurseForge and click Files near the top.
  • Find the row matching your Minecraft version and mod loader.
  • Click the three vertical dots on the right of that row, then select Download File.
  • Save the file somewhere easy to reach later, like your desktop.

Horse Expert will not load on its own. You also need its dependencies, downloaded the same way:

  • Forge users: Puzzles Lib and Curios API.
  • Fabric users: Puzzles Lib, Curios API, and Fabric API.

Skip any of these and the mod simply refuses to start. Keep everything in one folder so you can move the whole bundle at once.

Installing on the Client

Forge or Fabric needs to be set up on the launcher before any mod will run in-game. Once that is sorted, the rest is drag and drop.

  • Open the Minecraft launcher and click Installations at the top.
  • Find your modded profile in the list and click its Folder icon.
  • A new window opens. Step into the mods directory. If it does not exist, create it.
  • Drop the downloaded jar files into that directory.
  • Switch back to the launcher and hit Play on the modded profile.

Installing on the Server

The server needs the same treatment. First make sure Forge or Fabric is selected in the version selector of your control panel, and that you have restarted at least once so the required files generate. Then upload the mod files.

  • From your HolyHosting control panel, open the file manager from the panel sidebar, or connect via an FTP client.
  • Enter your password and click Login.
  • Open the mods directory, then click Upload in the toolbar.
  • Drag and drop the jar files into the upload area.
  • Wait until every file shows 100%, then go back to the main panel and restart the server.

Using Horse Expert In-Game

Once you join the server, you cannot simply stare at a horse and read its numbers. The mod requires a small crafted item called a Monocle, and the animal needs to be tamed first. Both steps are quick, and the Monocle recipe is cheap.

If you only want to test things, enable cheats or grant yourself operator status so you can swap to creative mode. Otherwise gather some basic resources and follow the steps below.

Crafting the Monocle

The Monocle is what unlocks the stat overlay. Recipe:

  • 4 Gold Nuggets
  • 1 Glass Pane

In the crafting grid, place a gold nugget in each of the four middle-edge slots (top, bottom, left, right) and the glass pane in the center. The Monocle goes into your helmet slot. Every player who wants to see stats needs their own.

Reading the Stats

Tame the horse or llama first. Keep mounting it until you see the heart particles. With the Monocle equipped, look at the animal and an overlay appears showing minimum and maximum health, movement speed, and jump height. That is your scouting report. It is useful for picking breeding candidates, or for quietly retiring the ones that will never amount to anything.

Breeding Better Animals

A small pen keeps things manageable. Tame both parents so you can compare their numbers, then feed them their breeding item: golden carrots for horses, hay bales for llamas. The newborn must also be tamed before its stats appear. Pairing two strong parents tends to produce stronger offspring, though sometimes a wild stallion with great base stats is faster to track down than to breed.

Troubleshooting

If the game launches fine but the server refuses your connection, the mismatch is almost always in the configuration. Check that Forge or Fabric is selected in the version selector on the control panel, that the version matches what the client runs (Forge 1.18.2 will not connect to a 1.20.1 server), and that every jar landed in the mods folder via FTP. Repeat the same checklist on the client side. A wrong loader on the launcher produces the same symptom.

If another mod is interfering, you may need to remove it or hunt down a compatible build. Reach out to support if nothing else works.

When players in-game cannot see any stats, the usual cause is a missing Monocle. The item must be worn in the helmet slot. The JEI mod will surface the recipe if you cannot remember it. If the Monocle is equipped and stats still refuse to appear, recheck which profile launched Minecraft and confirm the mods loaded without errors.
