How to Run an FTB Sky Odyssey Server in Minecraft

Vanilla Minecraft can lose its spark once the third diamond pickaxe stops feeling special. FTB Sky Odyssey is the cure: a skyblock-style modpack stacked with more than 200 mods that turns survival into a long tech-driven climb. As a standalone expansion to FTB Sky Adventures, it has racked up over a million downloads across launchers, and getting it running on a server is straightforward.

Setting Up the Server

First, log into your server panel and stop the server so the JAR can be swapped safely. Then open the JAR File selector and pick FTB Sky Odyssey from the list.

When the panel prompts you to generate a new world, accept and restart. The fresh world is required for the modpack to initialize correctly.

Without this step the islands sit just above bedrock instead of floating in the void, which kills the skyblock feel. Inside the panel, open the Config Files area and pick Server Settings. Find the Level Type field and set its value to `void`.

Save the change, accept the world regeneration prompt, and restart. That last bit is non-negotiable: the level type only applies when the world is created.

Installing the Client

The modpack is distributed through the FTB App, which is the official launcher from Feed The Beast. Same steps for both operating systems, just different installer downloads.

Windows

Go to the FTB App download page and click the Windows installer.

Run it, then open the app and head to the Browse tab. Search for FTB Sky Odyssey and hit Install.

When it finishes, jump back to My Modpacks and launch it.

macOS

Same page, but grab the macOS build instead.

Run the installer, open the FTB App, and head to Browse. Search for FTB Sky Odyssey and press Install.

Once the install completes, open My Modpacks to launch.

First Steps In-Game

When you connect, you spawn on a lonely cube floating in the void. Run `/team create [name]` to claim your team, which opens a GUI for picking an island layout.

Pick whichever island appeals to you, then start scraping resources together. The early game is the slowest part, so be patient with that first tree.

Useful Menus

Open your inventory (`E`) and look at the buttons in the top-left corner. A few of them carry most of the modpack's weight.

Quests

The quest book is your progression map. Each completed quest hands out currency or items, and following it gives the modpack a clear sense of direction instead of aimless grinding.

Claimed Chunks

This menu shows the chunks tied to your team. Right click to claim, left click to release. Useful for keeping other players (and the occasional griefer) out of your build.

Shop

Quest rewards can be spent in the in-game shop on ores, tools, mob eggs, and other items that would otherwise take ages to find.

Draconic Evolution is a high-tier tech mod built around draconium ore. The grind is real, but the endgame tools and machines are some of the strongest in modded Minecraft.

Extra Utilities 2 adds a wide grab bag of blocks and items, from decorative pieces to passive generators. Good for filling out gaps that other mods leave behind.

Inventory Pets lets you raise pocket-sized companions with handy abilities. Feed them their preferred food and you get perks like a portable chest, a mobile anvil, and other tricks that make life on a small island much easier.

Tech Reborn rounds out the tech side with its own progression line of machines and tools, so you have a parallel path to power outside Draconic Evolution.

Common Issues

The ground is visible from my island. The level type did not take effect. Reopen the server settings, confirm the level type reads `void`, save, and regenerate the world.

Players get an error when joining. Nine times out of ten the client is running the wrong modpack version. Make sure everyone installed FTB Sky Odyssey through the FTB App so the mod list matches.

Server hangs while loading. This usually appears after a mod is removed from an existing world. Open the server console and run `/fml confirm` to force the world to load without the missing mods.

Modded items appear in creative but not on the server. The server is probably still on its old JAR. Switch it back to FTB Sky Odyssey in the panel and restart so the pack loads properly.

Wrapping Up

FTB Sky Odyssey rewards patience. Lean on the quest book early, claim your chunks before you build anything you care about, and treat the shop as the shortcut it is. Solo or with a group, the modpack has enough mechanics to keep a server busy for a long time.
