Minecraft Education Adds Juneteenth History Lessons

Minecraft·June 19, 2021·5 min read

Juneteenth is now recognized as a federal holiday in the United States, and Mojang has supported classroom discussion around its history with new Minecraft: Education Edition maps.

Minecraft as a Classroom Tool

Minecraft began as a game about blocks, survival, and creativity, but it has grown into something much broader. Minecraft: Education Edition gives teachers a way to turn that familiar sandbox into lessons students can explore directly.

That educational side became especially important during COVID-19 quarantine, when remote and digital learning tools were suddenly doing a lot more heavy lifting than anyone expected. Minecraft: Education Edition has continued expanding with lessons across history, science, collaboration, and social topics.

With Juneteenth becoming a new federal holiday, Mojang added classroom material designed to explain why the day matters and how it connects to Black history in the United States.

Juneteenth Maps in Minecraft

Minecraft: Education Edition added several Juneteenth maps focused on the holiday's historical importance. The lessons were developed by Natasha Rachell and Felisa Ford, two education leaders from Atlanta public schools.

Rachell and Ford also worked on another Minecraft: Education Edition module focused on social justice called `Good Trouble`.

The Juneteenth content includes three different Minecraft maps:

  • Juneteenth: Why We Celebrate
  • Juneteenth: Freedom Day
  • Juneteenth Build Challenge

Each map has a different classroom purpose and is aimed at different student age ranges. Together, they give teachers structured ways to discuss emancipation, remembrance, and celebration through an interactive format.

Teachers and students can find the Juneteenth Minecraft maps and their lesson plans on the Minecraft Education site.
