How to Defeat the Wither in Three Simple Steps

Minecraft·July 26, 2023·8 min read

The Wither is one of Minecraft’s nastier boss fights, but it becomes much more manageable with the right setup. The short version is simple: prepare properly, summon it somewhere sensible, then survive the two-phase fight without panicking into a crater.

Step 1: Prepare Your Gear and Arena

Bring the following before starting the fight:

  • Diamond or Netherite armor with Blast Protection
  • Diamond or Netherite sword with Smite
  • Bow with Power
  • Golden Apples
  • Healing Potions
  • Totem of Undying (optional)

Blast Protection helps reduce damage from the Wither’s explosive skull projectiles. A Smite sword is ideal because the Wither is undead, and a Power bow gives you a reliable way to damage it while it is airborne.

Golden Apples provide strong survivability, while Healing Potions can save the fight when your health drops too fast. A Totem of Undying is optional, but it is a sensible safety net if you are worried about mistakes.

The battlefield matters just as much as the inventory. Fighting the Wither in a ravine or cavern can make the encounter easier because it limits how freely the boss can fly. Summoning it on the open surface gives it plenty of room, which is rarely good news.

Step 2: Summon the Wither

To summon the Wither, you need four Soul Sand or Soul Soil and three Wither Skeleton Skulls. Soul Sand and Soul Soil are common across several Nether biomes. Wither Skeleton Skulls are much harder to get because they drop from Wither Skeletons in Nether fortresses at a base rate of 2.5%.

Looting helps, but only so much. In Java Edition, Looting III raises the skull drop chance to 5.5%. In Bedrock Edition, Looting III raises it to 8.5%. Either way, expect to kill plenty of Wither Skeletons.

Once you have the materials, place the four Soul Sand or Soul Soil blocks in a T shape that is two blocks tall and three blocks wide. Put the three Wither Skeleton Skulls across the top of the T. Make sure everyone is ready before placing the final skull, because the fight starts immediately after the structure completes.

Step 3: Fight the Wither

When the Wither spawns, it charges briefly and then explodes. Use that short window to back away and ready your ranged weapon. During the first phase, the Wither flies overhead and fires wither skulls. Dodge, shoot back, and keep pressure on it until it reaches 50% health. Do not take too long, since the Wither passively heals throughout the fight.

At half health, phase two begins. The Wither gains wither armor, which makes it immune to arrows and tridents. Switch to melee and use your Smite sword, but keep moving because it can still fire skulls at close range.

In Java Edition, the fight continues this way until the Wither dies. Bedrock Edition is harsher. Phase two begins with another explosion, spawns four Wither Skeletons, and makes the Wither dash toward the player while destroying blocks. It also fires close-range skull bursts, including one blue skull. Bring extra healing and do not assume the arena will remain tidy.

The Reward

After the Wither dies, it drops 50 experience levels and a Nether Star. Use the Nether Star to craft a beacon and enjoy the glow. You earned it the loud way.
